Although this looks like a very pretty flower, it’s a very horrible w**d.

That is datura, commonly called jimsonw**d or thorn apple. The large upright trumpet-shaped flower is characteristic.

⚠️ Every part is highly poisonous to people and pets, especially the seeds. If you don’t want it, pull it with gloves before it develops its spiky seedpods, then bag it—don’t burn it or let animals eat it.

This is a American dagger moth caterpillar.

Avoid touching it bare-handed-the hairs can become embedded in skin and cause itching or a rash. If you need to move it, use a leaf, cardboard, or gloves. A single caterpillar usually won't cause meaningful plant damage.

And so it begins. Summer perennials are burnt, tired and ready for a well deserved rest. Let’s get them cut down so they can be beautiful next season.
