Part 2: Understanding Dwarf Papaya Plants

Many people grow papaya trees without realizing why their trees produce extremely small fruit—or no fruit at all. One of the main reasons is that they may have planted a male papaya tree.

At first glance, male papaya plants look almost identical to female plants. However, when you take a closer look, you may notice that their leaf stalks tend to be longer. Once the plant begins flowering, male papaya flowers grow in long clusters rather than close to the trunk.

Male papaya trees usually do not produce fruit. In rare cases, they may develop fruit, but it is often very small and has little value as an edible crop.

In Southeast Asia, male papaya flowers are commonly regarded as a traditional herb and are sometimes brewed into herbal drinks. However, as a fruit-producing tree, a male papaya plant has very little value.

After enjoying a ripe papaya, don’t be too quick to throw away the seeds. Papaya seeds have an excellent germination rate, often higher than 80%, which means you can easily grow your own papaya trees right at home.

This papaya tree was grown from a seed. It is now nine months old and is already getting ready to produce its first fruit!

However, papaya plants can be either male or female, and knowing the difference is very important if you want your trees to produce fruit. In my next post, I’ll explain in detail how to identify male and female papaya plants.
