Most homeowners spend more time researching their next TV than they do the person they're trusting with their home.
If you're planning a remodel, here are 5 questions I'd recommend asking every contractor you interview:
**1. What does your process look like?**
A good contractor should be able to clearly explain what happens from the first phone call all the way through project completion.
If they can't explain their process, there's a good chance they don't have one.
**2. How do you handle communication?**
One of the biggest frustrations homeowners have during a remodel isn't the construction itself—it's not knowing what's going on.
Ask how often you'll receive updates, who your point of contact will be, and how questions are handled throughout the project.
**3. What happens if we uncover something unexpected?**
Older homes love surprises.
A good contractor won't promise that unexpected issues never happen. Instead, they'll explain exactly how those situations are handled when they do.
**4. Can you walk me through a recent project similar to mine?**
You're looking for more than photos here.
Ask about challenges, timelines, lessons learned, and how they worked with the homeowner to achieve the final result.
**5. Why should I choose you over another contractor?**
This is one of my favorites.
The answer will tell you a lot about what they value.
Do they only talk about price?
Do they talk about craftsmanship?
Communication?
Organization?
Experience?
The right answer depends on what matters most to you.
At the end of the day, you're not just hiring someone to build your project.
You're hiring someone you'll be working closely with for weeks (or sometimes months)
Choose someone you trust, communicate well with, and genuinely enjoy working with.
Your future self will thank you.
