If you’ve ever felt a cold draft in winter or a room that never quite feels comfortable - that’s air leakage. In a typical New England home, warm air leaks out through tiny gaps in walls, ceilings, and windows. Cold air sneaks in to replace it. Your heating system works harder, rooms feel uneven, and comfort never quite settles. An airtight home changes all that.
By carefully sealing the building with an air barrier, heat stays inside the home where you want it. An air barrier is a continuous layer in the walls, roof, and foundation that stops indoor air from leaking out and cold outdoor air from sneaking in. Think of it like a really high quality windbreaker wrapped around the entire house.
But how do you know it actually works? That’s where a blower door test comes in (which ZED provides in-house). A temporary fan is placed in an exterior doorway to gently depressurize the house, allowing us to quantify how tight the house is and it makes air leaks easy to find so they can be sealed before the walls are closed.
The result of a properly airtight home? Room temperatures feel more even, floors feel warmer, drafts disappear, the house stays quieter and cleaner, and the structure is more durable (since by stopping air flow, you also stop moisture flow which prevents condensation).
