Studio Luz is pleased to see the next phase of redevelopment moving forward at the former Farren Care Center site in the Town of Montague, Massachusetts, funded by Governor Healey’s administration as a part of the Community One Stop for Growth awards.

As part of our work with Massachusetts Housing Partnership, led by Associate Sophie Nahrmann, we helped align previous visioning studies, rezoning efforts, and wetlands and alta surveys to support the site’s redevelopment. We’re excited that this work has helped secure funding for infrastructure and civil engineering design to advance the project.

The redevelopment will create opportunities for new housing, public open space, and transportation improvements, helping shape a new future for this important community site. We look forward to seeing the project continue to progress and the opportunities it will bring to Montague – thank you to Town of Montague, MHP, and the Complete Neighborhoods Initiative for the partnership. As Lilly discovered during her internship with us, we are designers here at Studio Luz, but our day to day also centers around construction, coordination, communication, and most importantly, working with people. It’s always exciting to see what teamwork can make possible! Studio Luz was proud to contribute to the design of 25 Garvey Street alongside The Architectural Team (TAT), Architect of Record, for this 125-home affordable housing development in Everett. Garvey Street is a joint venture between TND and Impact Residential Development.

Our team, led by Senior Project Manager Ignacio Lopez, led the design of the building’s shared spaces and administrative offices, including the lobby, mailroom, community room, and corridors—spaces that support residents’ everyday experiences and foster a sense of community. Studio Luz Principal Hansy Better Barraza recently joined the project team for a hard hat tour, celebrating the collective effort behind this milestone. Swipe to see more from the tour.

Roslindale Open Studios is just around the corner! We’re excited to once again support this inspiring neighborhood event, which brings local artists, residents, businesses, and visitors together to celebrate the creative community in Roslindale. Mark your calendars for October 17 and 18, from 11am–5pm, and come explore the work of artists throughout the neighborhood, including ceramics by our very own Senior Project Manager Leena Ismail, the creative behind Third Craft Pottery.

Studio Luz Designer + Project Manager Joshua Ssebuwufu is running for the Boston Society of Architects’ 2027 Membership Committee! Joshua is passionate about creating stronger pathways into the profession and building a more connected architectural community. Through his work with BosNOMA and service on the NOMA National Board, he has focused on connecting students and emerging professionals with mentorship, resources, leadership opportunities, and community, and he’s excited to bring that perspective to the BSA.

We’re proud to support Joshua, and excited to see him put his experience and energy toward helping the BSA continue to welcome, engage, and support the next generation of architects and designers. BSA members, learn more about Joshua and the other candidates and cast your vote through November 3.

What does it mean to design a more accessible campus? At Massasoit Community College, Studio Luz worked with Jones Architecture and DCAMM to rethink the experience of shared spaces, corridors, student and faculty areas, and environmental graphics through a Universal Design lens. Our latest article takes a closer look at the collaborative process behind the project, from listening to Massasoit students, faculty, and staff to designing spaces that support collaboration, connection, and different ways of navigating the campus. SLA Principal Anthony and Project Manager + Designer Sarah joined our partners at Commodore Builders for the 32nd Annual STV Golf Classic benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. They enjoyed an afternoon of golf, networking, and education alongside teams from across the A/E/C industry, all coming together to raise awareness and funds in support of the search for a cure for multiple sclerosis. We have been working together with Commodore and STV for the addition at Brooke Charter School, and it was nice to connect with each other out on the course!

Over the years, the STV Golf Classic has raised more than $1.925 million to advance MS research, making each year’s tournament an opportunity to have an impact both on and off the course. Thank you to Commodore for having us, and to STV for hosting another great event!

Last Sunday, Studio Luz was honored to attend the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition’s 20th Anniversary Celebration and Annual Gala, Legacy in Mattapan: 20 Years of Community Impact. Project Designer + Manager Joshua L. Ssebuwufu represented our office as we celebrated two decades of MFFC’s commitment to expanding healthy food access, fitness programming, wellness resources, and community-centered initiatives throughout Mattapan.

We were especially honored to be recognized as a Community Seed Sponsor and grateful to support our partners at MFFC and the important work they continue to lead. It was wonderful to see so many community members, partners, and supporters come together for the celebration, including Mayor Michelle Wu, and to see the breadth of support for MFFC’s work across Mattapan.

Joshua also had the chance to catch up with Executive Director Shavel’le Olivier, along with other community members and partners we’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with over the years. We congratulate MFFC on this incredible milestone and look forward to seeing all that’s ahead in this next chapter of growth and community impact.

From student shadow to Studio Luz intern! You may remember Lilly from when she first visited Studio Luz as a high school student. After spending time with us then, she returned this year as an intern, getting a closer look at life in an architecture studio and learning from our team.

We loved joining fellow design firms from the greater Boston area last week for the second annual BSA Dinks for Design Pickleball Tournament! All proceeds from this fun event support Architecture in Common’s K–12 Design Education programs, connecting Boston-area students with the skills, confidence, and experiences to imagine and shape the future of their communities.

Studio Luz team members Anthony, Ignacio, and Sarah spent the afternoon getting in some friendly competition while connecting with fellow designers and talking about the importance of design education for Boston’s youth. Shoutout to our new friends at Envision Resilience for their impressive work both on and off the court!
