🔎 Why Preventative Maintenance Matters in Your HVAC System
The photo above shows a burnt HVAC contactor — a common electrical component that controls power to the compressor and fan motors. Over time, contactors naturally wear due to electrical arcing every time they open and close.
When preventative maintenance is skipped, this is what can happen:
• The contact surfaces become pitted and carbonized
• Electrical resistance increases
• Excess heat builds up at the terminals
• Voltage drop occurs across the contacts
• Motors and compressors experience added strain
That added resistance and heat doesn’t just affect the contactor — it can impact the entire system. Loose or deteriorating connections can also lead to insulation damage, nuisance tripping, or in severe cases, component failure.
During routine preventative maintenance, components like this are inspected for:
✔️ Contact wear and pitting
✔️ Discoloration from overheating
✔️ Proper torque on terminals
✔️ Correct amp draw across motors
