Trees have feeder roots concentrated near the outer edge of the canopy, the “drip edge.” Because these feeder roots are located within 6 to 10 inches of the surface, they become especially vulnerable to serious damage, not only from trenching, but even more often from soil compaction. This occurs whenever heavy equipment or repeated vehicle traffic compact soil near the drip edge, pressing essential oxygen out of the soil and resulting in the death of beneficial aerobic bacteria.
