I’ve never been big on celebrating my birthday.

But 40 feels like a milestone worth acknowledging.

I grew up around this industry. I learned from family from the time I was a kid, and much of the foundation I still rely on today came from those years.

But I started Florida Environmental itself started from the ground up.

I had about $3,000 in my pocket, maxed out credit cards buying small equipment, and financed my first stander that I bought from my uncle’s equipment store in Tallahassee. What started on faith, now Continues, pushing forward through consistency. Consistency in showing up, consistency in putting in the work, consistency in faith and determination.

That was the beginning.

Ten years later, we’re building substantial projects, solving complex problems and bringing complete design-build projects from an idea on paper to something real in the landscape.

We’ve completed millions of dollars in projects along the way, but becoming one of the biggest companies has never been the goal.

I’d rather build something known for quality, creativity and work that lasts.

Design. Transform. Sustain.

Create spaces with purpose. Build them properly. Respect the environment around them. And leave behind something that will still make sense years from now.

I’m thankful for my family and friends, for everyone who has worked alongside me, and especially for the clients who have trusted myself and my team with their properties, ideas and investments over the last decade.

And I’m thankful for Florida — the place I work, live and play, and the canvas for so much of what we’ve created.

A lot has happened in 40 years.

A lot has been built in the last 10.

I’m proud of where we are, but much more interested in where we go from here.

Over the last month, Phase 2 at Gomez Tennis has completely transformed this plaza.

We excavated the existing low hardscape, removed the failed base material, installed 280 linear feet of Belgard Castle Manor wall block, and added more than 200 feet of drainage pipe to help move water away from the edges of the paver plaza and tennis courts.

From there, we brought in nearly 200,000 pounds — about 100 tons — of base rock to raise the plaza approximately 5 inches, added another 40,000 pounds of bedding sand, and installed roughly 2,600 SF of pavers.

And then comes what I like to call the icing on the cake.

This clip starts with one of our guys running the saw and cutting in the border, then moves into the finishing passes with the plate compactor after the pavers have been laid.

Tag along with us as we run the compactor across the surface, helping set the jointing sand down into the paver joints and lock everything together.

There’s far too much that went into this project to show in one quick video, so over the next few weeks we’ll share more of the project in the making — excavation, drainage, grade changes, base preparation, retaining walls, and everything underneath the finished surface.

Next week we’ll wash everything in, complete another 800 SF of walkway, set the remaining drainage basins and channel drains, and wrap things up with crushed shell and landscape material.

Phase 2 is almost across the finish line.

Not every project is big or glamorous. Sometimes it’s simply about showing up and solving a problem.

Today we returned to a beachfront property in Naples that we’ve worked on for nearly half a decade. The task was straightforward: lift a section of Shellstone patio, locate a low AC condensate line that was no longer draining properly, and build a simple, creative drainage structure around it.

Filter fabric, #57 limestone, proper drainage, fresh bedding sand, and the patio reset like we were never there.

Nothing flashy—just a small detail designed to let that condensate line quietly do its job for many years to come.

Good construction doesn’t always need to be seen. It just needs to work

Plant Spotlight | Bahamian Tabebuia 🌿

One of our favorite small flowering trees for South Florida landscapes — Tabebuia bahamensis, commonly known as the Bahamian or White Tabebuia.

What makes this tree special isn’t just its size — it’s the flower. On this specimen, newly opening trumpet-shaped blooms carry a soft lavender-violet blush before aging into an almost pure white, creating several shades of color across the canopy at once.

Unlike some flowering trees that can eventually dominate a smaller landscape, the Bahamian Tabebuia maintains a much more manageable form, making it an excellent accent tree for courtyards, entry gardens and tighter South Florida spaces.

It’s also well suited to our climate: adaptable to well-drained soils, drought tolerant once established, and capable of handling coastal wind and salt exposure.

Beautiful flowers. Appropriate scale. A tree selected for the space it will become — not just the size it is when planted.

Gomez Tennis — Phase 1

From the beginning, the goal was to create a distinctly Florida-native coastal landscape—resilient, low-water and built to feel like it belongs here.

I think we nailed it.

Phase 1 brings together a Belgard Castle Manor wall system, Aqualine permeable paver patio, putting green, bocce court, sand volleyball court, crushed-shell pathways, meditation boulders, limestone riprap and climate-adapted landscaping into one connected recreation space.

The putting green, bocce turf and Aqualine patio were all constructed over permeable base systems, allowing water to move through the profile—an important consideration in Southwest Florida.

We also transformed the existing septic mound into a beach-dune-inspired landscape using native and ornamental grasses, wildflowers and spreading groundcovers. It’s still young, and over the coming months it will continue to fill in and soften naturally.

The planting includes 12+ Sabal palms, Paurotis palms, several coconut palms, along with existing mature spindle and Areca palms. Blue Daze, Black-Eyed Susan, Blanket Flower, Dune Sunflower, Silver Buttonwood, Red-Tip Cocoplum and other Florida-adapted material complete the palette.

And despite the lush appearance, this landscape is designed to function almost like a xeriscape once established, with minimal supplemental irrigation needs.

The white-sand area is the volleyball court, with the net still awaiting final installation. We will also add hammocks between the Sable Palms in the backdrop.

Florida coastal vibes, permeability, recreation and long-term resilience—all working together.

Not every paver system should be built the same way.

In South Florida, the right installation depends on site conditions, groundwater, drainage goals, coastal exposure, loading, budget — and how the surface will be maintained years from now.

In this guide, we break down:

• Dense-graded vs. open-graded limestone base
• Polymeric sand vs. traditional mason sand
• Joint-stabilizing sealers such as Cobble Loc
• True permeable pavement applications
• Coastal conditions, high water tables and drainage
• Maintenance planning at years 3, 6, 9 and beyond

Open-graded construction is an excellent tool. Dense-graded construction is an excellent tool. Polymeric sand and traditional joint systems both have their place.

The important question is not “Which method is trending?”

It’s “Which system makes the most sense for this property?”

We design for performance on day one — and for the contractor or homeowner who has to maintain that pavement 10+ years from now.

I believe in prayer. I also believe an answered prayer often comes disguised as more responsibility, more work, and another opportunity to prove what you’ll do with what God has given you.

Proverbs 14:23 reminds us that there is profit in diligent work—not simply in talking about what we intend to do.

On this project, that work meant installing 6-inch drainage lines through the clubhouse as part of an extensive site drainage system, long before anyone would see the finished product.

God may open the door. Our job is to walk through it with faith, discipline, care, and excellence in the work we’ve been entrusted to do.

Pray for the opportunity. Honor God in the ex*****on. 🙏
