On rural Idaho land, water is something you plan for, not something that just appears at the tap. A private well draws from the ground the home sits on. The roof, with its generous overhangs, can capture the rain that falls for free. Efficient fixtures and smart design stretch every gallon. Planned as one system from the start, it makes a home that stands on its own, supplied by its own land and using every drop with care. The blog explains it. Full post at the link in bio.

A roof does far more than shed rain. On a high-performance home, the overhangs are the sun's on-off switch: they welcome the low winter sun and block the high summer sun with nothing but geometry. Those same overhangs are the home's hat, keeping weather off the walls so the plaster ages beautifully for a century. And the roof completes the insulated envelope up and over the top. Designed with intent, it protects, shades, seals, and crowns the whole home at once. The blog explains it. Full post at the link in bio.

People come to straw bale for the walls. But the finishes inside decide whether the whole home feels like one coherent thing. Breathable plaster walls deserve floors and surfaces chosen the same way: real wood, stone, tile, clay. Materials that age with character instead of wearing out, and that keep the air as clean as the walls intended. A home that is natural and grounded from the plaster all the way to the floorboards. You feel it the moment you walk in. The blog explains it. Full post at the link in bio.

People come to straw bale for the walls, the insulation, the quiet, the thickness. But once you are standing inside a finished home, something becomes clear. The walls set a tone, and everything else either honors it or fights it. It would be strange to build breathable, no-off-gassing plaster walls and then run cheap synthetic flooring and high-VOC finishes through the same rooms. So the finishes carry the same standard: natural wood, stone, tile, and clay, chosen to last the life of the home and keep the air genuinely clean. The blog explains how a straw bale home gets finished. Read the full breakdown.

The best homes don’t compete with the landscape. They become part of it.

At EarthCraft Construction, we design custom homes that work with Boise’s natural terrain, not against it.

LEARN & BURN is coming soon. 🔥

What happens when straw bale construction meets real fire?

Earthcraft design | build is partnering with the Wildland Firefighter Foundation for a hands-on community event that puts the fire resilience of straw bale walls to the test.

This isn’t a presentation or a simulation. We’re building it, burning it, and seeing firsthand how these natural building systems perform under real fire exposure.

It’s an opportunity to bring together builders, firefighters, homeowners, and our community to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and learn more about designing homes with wildfire resilience in mind.

Real fire. Real answers.

Do You Still Need a Furnace in a High-Performance Idaho Home?

A furnace and full duct system land on most custom home plans before anyone asks if you need them. In a true high-performance home, the honest answer is often far less, and sometimes almost none. Our Squaw Butte project ran zero mechanical heating from January through March 2023. R-45 walls, passive solar, and thermal mass held the heat, and a single wood stove did the rest. The blog breaks down what heating a high-performance home really looks like. Read the full breakdown.

Do Straw Bale Homes Attract Rodents and Pests? Separating Myth from Reality

A wall made of straw must be full of mice, right? It is the question that comes up at every dinner party, and it falls apart the moment you understand the wall. Pests want a void to nest in and something to eat. A conventional wall hands them a hollow stud cavity. A straw bale wall is solid, compressed, and sealed under plaster, with no void and nothing to eat, because straw is the dry hollow stalk left after the grain is gone. The myth describes conventional walls better than straw bale. Read the full breakdown.

Custom Home vs Production Builder: What You’re Actually Choosing in Idaho

When people say they want to build a home in Idaho, they picture one process. There are really two. A production builder fits you into a proven plan, on their lot, with finishes from a menu, designed around their economics. A true custom builder starts with you, your land, and how you want to live, with materials chosen to perform for a century. They are not two flavors of the same thing. The blog breaks down what you are actually choosing. Read the full breakdown.
