That was one heck of a storm. Peak gusts of over 70 mph. At those speeds anything can happen.
Now that it’s passed here’s some advice.
Be careful!
Things can fracture in those winds but not fail right away.
Don’t worry about picking up the branches right away, give things a little time.
The best plan is to hire your local professional to do a post storm inspection of your trees. This might be as simple as a level one risk assessment looking for obvious issues.
If a tree takes done a power line stay far away and call Idaho Power or EMS. Electricity can travel through the ground and be very dangerous.
Just because part of your tree failed in a storm doesn’t mean the whole tree is compromised. Trees are shedding organisms. Have a qualified professional inspect them and if they say the whole tree must be removed because a limb failed get another opinion.
Be safe out there, and we will see you in the trees!

Testing the internal pressure of the trees before doing injections helps us avoid wounding the tree and not having a successful treatment.
Just one of the ways we try to go the extra step to ensure we are offering the best care for your trees that we can.

I am honored to have been featured in the most recent TCIA Magazine along with some great fellow arborists from around the country.
I had to go slightly off topic and talk about overcoming the fear of and preserving big old trees, but that’s my mission these days!

Fun stuff!

We here at ITP want to congratulate our pruning team lead Kevin Chapton for obtaining the TCIA CTSP credential! He adds this to his ISA CA, TRAQ and numerous TCIA credentials.

The Certified Treecare Safety Professional is the industry standard for safety AND adult education, because if we can’t effectively teach all different types of people about safety then what are we even doing?

We love to support our team and it’s so satisfying to watch them grow.

Safety culture requires each of us be committed to keeping ourselves and our teams safe.

So please join me in giving Kevin a huge “Way to go!”

Greetings Treeople!

A quick update for you all, we are seeing cold damage on a few main tree species due to the low temps we had on the 16th/17th where we saw temps down to around 28 degrees.

So far we’ve seen damage in English walnut (Juglans regia), tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), catalpa (Catalpa sp.) and tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima). There may be other species we find over the next few days.

The general symptoms are darker, drooping leaves with an almost burnt or scorched appearance. It can be whole leaves or the along the edges. It is generally isolated to the youngest leaves.

For the most part these trees will push new growth using stored energy and make a full recovery. Unless a tree is dealing with other serious stressors a single night in that temperature range is not a major concern.

See you in the trees!

Does your tree care professional follow the industry standards?

Doing so is part of our Duty of Care-a legal obligation to take reasonable actions to protect others from harm. This means when an unprofessional tree company lions tails a tree, “wind sails” a tree, tops a tree or makes giant pruning cuts that result in decay and those actions result in a tree failure that causes harm or damage they may be found liable. And why would anyone pay to have their valuable trees damaged?

Part of our duty of care for is to use the generally accepted Standard of Care, as defined in applicable standards, best management practices, qualifications and training courses when performing work.

Be sure to ask your tree care professional if they follow the ANSI A300, Z133, best management practices and if their team is certified and qualified to do the work you are requesting.

One way to tell is if their work proposals include the appropriate elements such as tree ID & location, objectives, specifications (at a minimum) and if they use appropriate safety equipment and PPE as well as having appropriate insurance and qualifications.

Not only can improper work damage your tree, increase risk and reduce benefits, it’s a waste of your money to pay someone to do these things to your trees.

We often see pruning work done that ignores critical conditions, decreases health, increases risk and that is outside of the standards.

Just a reminder:
Insurance companies should NOT be making tree management decisions.

They will most likely increase tree risk over time.

They are most likely mitigating risk that is low and doesn’t need to be mitigated.

Branches over and/or close to your roof are NOT inherently bad (and can actually be a protection factor and a low risk with negligible consequences of failure)!

What they suggest be done to the trees (not for them) will often harm the tree and reduce the benefits.

And they want to make you pay for this disservice!

How very dare they.

If you’re having issues with trees and your insurance company contact us!
