Construction of The Rate by Gaillard Heyward began in the winter of 1946. Cinderblock buildings with a stepped parapet front facade and gabled roof were the style of this era for town stores in the Lowcountry. Originally built as a grocery store, The Rate went on to become the town ice cream shop, complete with a hand painted Sealtest Ice Cream mural. In 1952, it was transformed into the town’s Post Office run by Postmistress Lucille Heyward until it was decommissioned in 1965.

After sitting empty for nearly 60 years and dangerously close to collapse, The Rate was rehabilitated in 2019 by Simpson Construction and now serves as their office.
