Designed to blend into the surrounding woods, this office and art studio was created for a former residential client whose home Pearce had designed several years earlier.

The building was originally conceived as an office for one half of the couple and an art studio for the other, with additional office and storage space included. Surrounded by tall pines, the studio gets loads of filtered natural light throughout the day and feels closely connected to the landscape.

A look at the Game Land Road Residence.

A calm, layered color palette runs throughout the home, with details like the arched wood door in the kitchen adding character along the way. That same attention to comfort carries outdoors, from the screened porch to the backyard fire pit, creating spaces that feel just as inviting as the interiors.

Meet Pearce, founder of Pearce Scott Architects.

Pearce grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he spent time exploring historic homes with his mother, who was active in the local Historic Preservation Society. He was always the class artist, so studying architecture at North Carolina State University felt like a natural fit.

After college, he worked with several architects in historic Wilmington while also designing and building furniture. He later earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago before practicing in Cincinnati, where he met his wife, Maggie.

They moved to the Lowcountry in the early 2000s, and after working with several local architecture firms, Pearce founded PSA in 2013.

Today, he still spends time drawing in pen and ink and watercolor. Outside of architecture, he enjoys traveling, live music, and, more recently, collecting acorns for a future oak farm he hopes to run after retirement.

Designed in 2021 for a marsh-facing lot in Oldfield, this home was a fun opportunity to do something a little different.
The clients had built two traditionally designed homes before this one and were ready for a change. We kept the exterior rooted in the Lowcountry, but gave the interiors a more modern feel.

Project 1663 was originally designed in 2016 for a large lot in the May River Forest neighborhood of Palmetto Bluff.

Conceptualized as a contemporary take on the Lowcountry vernacular, the project was ultimately never realized, but remains one of the most unique homes PSA has ever worked on.

The project was developed in close collaboration with the client, an interior designer relocating to the Lowcountry from Cincinnati. Working back and forth through hand-sketched ideas kept the design process loose and fluid, while allowing the architecture and interiors to be considered together from the very beginning.

In 2022, the project was recognized with a Design Award from AIA Hilton Head Island in the Paper Architecture / Unbuilt Project category.

A look back at a project that gave us the opportunity to explore a thoughtful architectural response to the site and the client’s vision.

One of our favorites, The Quayside Cottage shows how much thoughtful design can do with a small footprint.

Designed as a weekend retreat in Palmetto Bluff, the house was originally created for another client in another part of the Moreland neighborhood. When this client came to us looking for a “small weekend cottage,” we showed him the plan—and he loved it.

One of the things we especially like about this project is the flexibility built into the design. The ground-floor bedroom wing could eventually be replicated on the opposite side of the house, creating an additional bedroom and bathroom suite. Space was also reserved toward the front of the small lot for a future garage.

It’s a great example of how a smaller home can still be designed with the future in mind. We’re also excited to see this plan make its way into an upcoming Southern Living House Plans collection—more on that soon.

The Cox Residence in Oldfield brings together a beautiful collection of elegant white structures surrounded by the natural beauty of the Lowcountry.

We especially love the charming potting shed, tucked among the greenery and adding another layer of character to the property. Together, the architecture and landscape create a timeless, inviting setting that feels distinctly at home in Oldfield.

The Barge Landing Guest Retreat was designed in 2020 to give visiting guests a place of their own—private and cozy, but still closely connected to the landscape.

The retreat consists of two structures: a small guest cottage and a larger guest barn. At just over 500 heated square feet, the cottage includes a private bedroom and bath, a small sitting room with a coffee bar, and covered porch access from both spaces. French doors open toward views of the pond, while mature live oaks help tuck the cottage quietly into the landscape.

The guest barn was designed with entertaining in mind, featuring a kitchenette, powder room, movie-watching area, pinball machines, and a large screened porch with vaulted ceilings and a floating fireplace. A raised walkway connects the barn to the cottage, creating a natural relationship between the two structures.

Custom trusswork and soaring beams give the screened porch its own sense of canopy, complementing the live oaks surrounding the guest cottage.

The Moreland River House began with a site study in 2014, when we were looking at the possibilities for a main house, carriage house, and guest house on this property overlooking the marshes of Corley Creek.

The main house and carriage house were designed in 2016 and built in 2017–2018. Years later, after the property changed hands, the new owners returned to the original plan and asked us to design the guest house in the same location that had been envisioned years before, along with a new pool.

Completed just a few months ago, the guest house now joins the original home among the pines, creating a collection of buildings that feels connected to both the landscape and the architecture that came before it.

There’s a lot more to this project—and its evolution over the years—that we’ll be sharing soon.
