In other condos in this eastside complex, this little room is usually used as a dining room or TV room. Sometimes it's left off completely for a screened porch. Our client wanted a cozy spot for TV (the only spot in the living room was over the fireplace - and you know how we feel about that), but from Day 1 asked to rebrand the room so that the emphasis was on the cozy, rather than the tv. Welcome to the Snug, everybody's favorite. It features Stone Blue cabinets with green leather pulls, oak-paneled walls, art that evokes the homeowner's love of fashion and sewing, embroidered drapery layered over glare-reducing woven blinds, and the pièce de résistance: an arm chair and ottoman for which we searched high and low, to ensure it was Just Right, Goldielocks style. This little nook of a room lives up to its name. Bring on the chilly evenings; we'll just be right here, snug as a bug.

One of our client's goals with the redesign of her open concept condo was to make the kitchen recede. Although she likes being in the middle of the action while cooking (for herself and for company), she didn't want the space to scream Kitchen! from the adjacent spaces. One of the ways to tone down a kitchen is with a low profile induction cooktop rather than a full range, but this is not a large kitchen, so that meant we needed somewhere for ovens. Enter the Back Kitchen, aka the Scullery, which in this case, doubles as a Laundry Room. Like many builder homes, the laundry/mud room in this condo was stuck between the garage and kitchen, doorways limiting functionality such that the square footage was vastly underutilized and the flow was awkward. We moved the door (and made the new one the best little arched darling), added custom cabinetry on both sides and wallpaper so it felt like a place you want to be, and relocated the mud/drop zone to the garage for a little more elbow space.

THIS HOME. Friends. We could not adore it more. Our project is now complete after about 6 months of design and 5 months of construction, and it is up on our site for your drooling pleasure. Home is always a palpable experience, so it is a real art to capture that spirit on film (ahem, megapixels), and we are so grateful to for her talent and skill. This not-particularly-large condo on Bloomington’s east side was built in 2012 with, for the most part, good bones and the right rooms for our client, laid out in a fairly logical and workable way. What it lacked? Personality. (And, in some key areas, thoughtful design.) Of course our client moved in with all the stories and layers of a life well-lived leading up to this chapter, but she was the first to admit that she didn’t know how to translate who she was now into this new space, in a lasting way that would also work for the long trajectory she envisioned in it. Enter SYH.

Is there anything better than the onset of Fall? There may be things as good, but I say nothing better. Still warm enough most days for Birkenstocks and a cotton scarf, the ticks have gone so the dogs can get back on the trails, leaves crunch underfoot, heaters and air conditioners alike get a break, and everyone--I mean everyone--is making chili. If, boiled down to the essence of our work, designers trade in feelings, then October provides fodder that is simply unsurpassed by other seasons and holidays. It's a slant of light and a smell in the air, and a hearth that beckons us home.

You should know by now that residential architecture and design is, for us, serious business. A functional kitchen triangle matters. Good natural light, and also appropriate shade and privacy, is crucial. Resilient materials - stone countertops, wool rugs, porcelain tile - make life easier. Ensuring shower doors don't hit shower heads, bed sides have light, you can reach the stuff on the upper shelf, and the second floor stays up: all, nonnegotiable.

But insofar as we can pick and suffer no functional repercussions between a basic lamp shade or a translucent butterfly shade, a standard leg that holds a piece up versus a brass stiletto, or a grey chair versus a two-toned pink and purple one with a yellow welt, I mean. We vote whimsy.

Whatever the reason, these days, I simply cannot get enough whimsy and color and pattern. Picking what to wear now means looking for the least constrictive but most colorful option. (I am so inspired by https://www.instagram.com/homerunballerina/ and https://www.instagram.com/chelseagettingdressed/!) And when the SYH gals gather round our studio island to palette play for a new client, or hunt for art and fabric and stone, we are seeking more punch, more depth, more personality.

We just presented art to some current clients who have been living without it (except for their daughter's work) for decades. They don't agree on the medium or style; it is expensive and also makes a statement; they sense that the various pieces need to work together somehow. There are a lot of variables, and since art isn't absolutely necessary--like having a place to sit or something to block the afternoon sun streaming in--it has stopped them in their tracks and been left undone. We get it! But we can help.

Clients who engage SYH in full service design scopes that include expanding or curating art collections have, not gonna lie, the best results. We are jazzed about art and what it can do for a space and the people in it, and we know how to maximize its effect: how to compose a gallery wall (rules, schmules), when to go big (always), how high to hang (lower than you think), what should have a far away view and what you want to pass by closely so you see the details. We have favorite local artists and galleries, and favorites afar and online. Sometimes we commission art the same way we commission custom furniture or rugs, and sometimes we source more affordable prints that transform a space without breaking the bank or looking like you got it at Hobby Lobby. Always, we source art the way we design everything else: to work in the particular home and for the pleasure of the people who live there.

I’m so honored to be asked by to sit on her panel at with the illustrious .lyle.design and . (Y’all, these are such talented humans! Click and follow those links!) The group met via zoom this week to prep, and to my great joy, the theme — Getting Discovered in the Age of AI Search — became an earnest discussion of the importance of authenticity in this digital age. Proving yet again that AI has nothing on us humans. If you are in the industry and going to High Point (sorry, Mom) and want to join the discussion, register and come on over to (where, who is kidding, you need to go anyway) at 10am Sunday, Oct. 18. There will be espresso and mimosas and cash-and-carry jewelry! And SYH greats and will be there! Honestly everything about this event is appealing, imho. 😉

For National Coffee Day, we bring you not just coffee, but great places to brew and drink coffee. Because to be honest, we don’t know if we could choose which matters more: the beverage or the setting.

If you follow our stories, you know that this past week Team SYH has been busy photographing our gorgeous project - a joy of a thing to spend much of 2026 on, for and with the loveliest of women, who moved here as part of a new chapter in her life, brought SYH on to help her home reflect her present iteration in all the best ways, and has become a new friend to all of us. Last week, we installed the final art, drapery and patio furniture there. In between, and I popped over to the Osage Place neighborhood with the Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County Women+ Build for a sticky hot day working on the homes of two other women who are launching new chapters of their own.

Residential design often catches people at moments of transition, and at SYH, we never take the privilege of being part of that for granted. People in transition especially need all the neuroaesthetic benefits of a stable, thoughtful home. When new clients schedule an Initial Consultation with us, they are prompted to help us help some of the many people in our community who don't have homes that envelope them at the end of a long day. We match their donation of a portion of their consultation fee to their choice of organizations working hard to help people get into stable homes: Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, IN, Beacon, New Hope for Families, Middle Way House, Refugee Support Network, and Trinity Haven Indy.

We deeply believe in the importance of Home. For our clients and for so many people we'll never meet. Thinking of the Fall Equinox this week and holding contradictions in balance, we hold both these things to be true: it is such a privilege to get to work on the artistic, layered homes we create. And gosh are we aware of how many people would benefit from this work, for whom it is out of reach.

Just in time for Autumn to arrive, temperatures here in Indiana have finally dropped! I'm not sure we can promise that football games in the 90s are behind us, but here's hoping. To help propel and inspire the cool down, we bring you some of our favorite fireplaces from past projects. Is there anything better than gathering with your people around firelight?

Last Fall Equinox, I was at a Singing Retreat, because I like to think I'm just a little bit Witch, and group vocal improv and singing up the sun in the morning are absolutely my jam. This year, outside of the art hang and photo shoot and trip to Carmel to meet with a contractor for a new project, I'm busy with and events at the and mostly, wrapping up a season of spectating . It's a good time of year to honor life's many facets and contradictions: dark and light, singing retreats and tailgating, art museums and golf courses. The Fall Equinox is the ultimate cosmic pivot point, a moment of balance in which the forces pulling us are not fighting, for just a moment. This week, I'll be trying hard to notice and savor that pause, lungs full from summer, ready to begin the long exhale of Fall.
