Bread & Roses Nursery Working with Nature to Create Edible and Beautiful Landscapes. Bread and Roses is surrounded by the Hoosier National Forest.

We look to the forest for answers and inspiration. With a focus on species that serve multiple functions in the landscape we carry a wide range of perennial trees and shrubs, herbs, berries, flowers and so much more. We utilize the design principles and ethics of Permaculture to propagate and grow plants in a manner that gives back to the surrounding ecosystem. We do this by planting at least one

of every species in the gardens of the Will Holler Homestead. We also strive to build resilience in our local community by giving away tons of information with every plant!

Wait...where is Salem?

The beloved gardens in the holler near Hardin Ridge, where B&R started many years ago, are still thriving. Salem and his wife Ash continue to operate as Bread & Roses Gardens, growing an abundance of food and herbs for their value added products, teas and medicinal offerings. Follow Bread & Roses Gardens and Blossom & The Bee Tea Co. for more information.

When Salem and I first set out on the journey of discovering the ways of permaculture and living off the land we knew things would evolve through the years. We always planned to have our own farms along with this shared business and most importantly our friendship guiding the way. It has been a wild decade plus of challenging what we’ve learned, finding new methods and new people to expand our understanding of this wonderful life. From the wild days of bucket baths, long winter nights in the holler tree house shooting dice, and hog roasts with friends to forming bands, getting married and now having a child, I feel so lucky to have taken this trip with Bread & Roses.

Cheers to all those we’ve worked with, those who’ve helped us through the years, those who’ve inspired us and those who have supported the grand experiment of getting back to the land in spite of the techno fantasy that consumes the world. It’s been one heck of a ride. Here’s to the next chapter. Time to come together and make the world a better place. Plant trees, dance, sing, hug and rise up!

And so it begins... Another year growing plants for our community! We are starting with some new native perennials. Natives are all the rage nowadays for good reason. Though we aren’t native purists, as we like to grow food and other appropriate species, we see the value of native species - they are tough, adapted to our region, pollinator friendly and require less maintenance than other plantings. Rather than buy in plugs that aren’t grown organically we start from seed. This is a challenge as perennial seeds are tough to germinate. They require a cold period, know as stratification, to grow. Think about it, a plant sets seed in the late summer or fall and then goes through a long cold moist winter. To mimic that we put the seeds in moist sand and then put them in the fridge for up to 60 days. Compared to the veg and annual flowers we do, this is a lot more work! I’ll keep ya updated on the progress! 2020 is going to a great year for gardening and farming! Thanks for the seeds

Our Story

Bread & Roses Nursery is a certified organic plant nursery and landscaping company based in Bloomington, Indiana. Founders Salem Willard and Jonas Carpenter started the business in 2012. Our mission is to help Bloomington and surrounding communities transition to a more sustainable and regenerative future. We do so by offering a wide array of edible and useful plants, as well as landscape consultation, design, installation and maintenance.

Our work is geared towards promoting stronger biodiversity and increasing food production in home ecosystems. Stronger biodiversity enhances the overall resiliency and habitat for all creatures including song birds and beneficial insects, while also creating beauty. Increasing home food production offsets the need for imported produce, reduces carbon footprint, saves money, and tastes better.

Bread & Roses Nursery lives in Will Holler, near the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area just south of Lake Monroe. This land is also home to Salem’s personal farmstead. Here we propagate our nursery stock and manage an incredibly diverse perennial landscape. The farm and nursery are off-grid and utilize rainwater for irrigation and solar panels for electricity. As of 2017, the nursery became certified organic and is dedicated to following beyond organic practices. We never use synthetic fertilizers or any harsh chemicals.

The majority of our plants are grown on site from our own cuttings, divisions or seeds. When we buy in seeds or plants to grow, we choose top quality and ethical purveyors. Our plants are grown in compost based potting mixes from Morgan Composting in Michigan. The varieties we offer are farmer-tested and choose based on their regional appropriateness, vigor, disease resistance, and overall yield quality. A lot of what we grow are heirloom and open pollinated, with a few hybrid favorites here and there.
