I just finished this brick pathway for a customer, thought I'd show photos of the progression of this project.
First everything is dug to a depth of 8", the string line indicates how high my base needs to be.

Recycled concrete is added a few inches at a time and compacted until it's level with the string line, (about 4" depth). Now the hardest and most important part is done.

A 1" layer of sand is achieved by screeding it with a 2x4 along 1" conduit. And now for the easiest part...laying the pavers.

Cut the pavers, install plastic edging to hold pavers in place, add a layer of sand, then run the compactor over everything. Sweep in sand, sweep in sand again, and again...fix the grade, and voila.

My house... most of this was done about four years ago. The tree in the first few pictures is a dwarf Serbian Spruce--one of my favorites. The needles are light on the underside which gives it a sort of two tone effect. The sedum next to it gets bright pink flowers in late summer.

The shrub is a Viburnum Plicatum,--can't remember the cultivar name. The weeping tree on the end is a weeping Katsura. And in the last picture...that's Lily Grace Bauer...and a recently planted Black gum tree.
