☀️ Summer is almost here — and most NJ homeowners have no idea their electrical system isn't ready for it.
Here's the truth: summer puts more stress on your home's electrical system than any other season.
Air conditioners running around the clock, pools and hot tubs firing up, outdoor lighting, backyard parties, charging stations — it all adds up fast.
And when an overloaded system fails, it doesn't just trip a breaker. It can start a fire.
Here are some things every homeowner should be doing right now before the heat hits:
🔲 Check Your Breaker Panel
If your breakers are tripping frequently, that's not just an annoyance — it's a warning sign. An outdated or overloaded panel can't handle the demands of a modern home in summer. If your panel is 20+ years old or still running 100-amp service, it may be time for an upgrade.
🔲 Test Your GFCI Outlets
GFCI outlets (the ones with the little reset buttons) are required near water sources — kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors. Press the test button on each one. If it doesn't trip and reset properly, it needs to be replaced. This is one of the most overlooked safety items in any home.
🔲 Inspect Your Outdoor Outlets and Wiring
Winter weather is hard on outdoor electrical components. Before you plug in string lights, landscape lighting, or outdoor entertainment setups this summer — inspect the outlets and any exposed wiring for cracks, corrosion, or damage. A damaged outdoor outlet near a garden hose or sprinkler system is a serious hazard.
🔲 Don't Overload Extension Cords
Summer entertaining means more devices, more power strips, more extension cords. Extension cords are a temporary solution — not a permanent one. If you're relying on them regularly, you probably need additional outlets installed. Daisy-chaining power strips is one of the leading causes of electrical fires.
🔲 Get Your A/C Circuit Inspected
Central air conditioners and window units draw a significant amount of power. If your A/C is on a circuit that also powers other appliances, you're asking for trouble. A dedicated circuit for your A/C unit isn't just smart — in many cases it's required by code.
🔲 Pool and Hot Tub Electrical — Don't DIY This One
Water and electricity are a deadly combination. If you're opening a pool or hot tub this season, have a licensed electrician inspect the bonding and grounding system, GFCI protection, and any underwater lighting. This isn't the place to cut corners.
🔲 Consider an EV Charger Before Summer Road Trips
More NJ homeowners are going electric. If you're still using a standard outlet to charge your EV overnight, you're leaving efficiency on the table — and potentially stressing your system. A Level 2 home charger is faster, safer, and cleaner on your electrical infrastructure.
🔲 Schedule a Home Safety Inspection
If you haven't had a licensed electrician walk through your home in the last few years, summer is the perfect time. A professional inspection can catch issues you'd never notice until something goes wrong — and "something going wrong" with electricity is never a small problem.
