This is an example of a termination of 14 Ga. High tensile barbed wire.
High tensile barbed wire is a great option for low maintenance pasture fence for a few reasons.
reason 1. the galvanized coating on high tensile wire is typically class 3 which is 3x better than class 1 wire you commonly see. In Oklahoma I see more times than not on fences we tear out, the T-posts are in much better shape than the wire on a 20-30 year fence. Once wire loses its galvanized coating the weather eats at the wire itself. Before long you get a fence that in unrepairable.
reason 2. the breaking strength. It has a much higher carbon content than standard 12.5 gauge wire. Even though High tensile wire is of smaller diameter, it is of a higher tensile strength. For instance, when a tree falls on a high tensile fence there is a much higher chance of the wire springing back after removal than standard 12.5ga. which will likely snap or stretch pretty badly.
reason 3. Stretch. If you have been around enough fences you have likely noticed loose wires, seemingly without cause, this is a common characteristic of 12.5 ga. that likely did not get stretched tight enough. With high tensile wire the stretch is much lower, which means very low maintenance with proper bracing. standard 12.5ga can stretch up to 14% vs high tensile with 3%.
reason 4. price. the price for 14 ga. class 3 high tensile barbed wire is typically 10-20% lower than standard class 1 12.5ga. It adds up.
reason 5. The stiffer barbs can help turn thick hided cattle or other livestock.
There are two cons I can think of..
1. you can absolutely over stretch High tensile wire. when that happens you take all the give out of it which can lead to breaking and repairs. Also when stretching high tensile barbed wire you can actually unravel the strands which leads to failure of the wire.
2. There is a learning curve to using it. It has to be treated differently than standard low carbon wire. When repairing, splicing, tying off, it works in a different way and requires learning how to use it. I believe this is the biggest reason people do don't like it.
Both styles work and do the job. I have seen both styles fail, as well as hold up for a very long time. Hopefully you can take something away from this and apply to your unique situation.
