Have you been wondering: "what's a skipper?" Skippers are a group of butterflies placed in the family Hesperiidae within the order Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). So--a Cousin! Are they as valuable in the ecosystem as moths and butterflies? Yes! Grass skippers feed on native (little bluestem, carex) and non native grasses (crabgrass), answering the question: "What good are native grasses to the environment?" Spread-wing skippers feed on broad leaf plants like hollyhock, mallow and false indigo.

Like all butterflies, skippers go through a complete metamorphosis, meaning their life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult. They're super useful as pollinators and bird support.
