Pools don't stop needing attention once nobody's swimming. Leaves pile up fast this time of year, and water that sits untreated through the winter is a lot harder to bring back in the spring.

We handle cleaning and regular maintenance, and the off-season is also when upgrades are easiest, since the pool isn't being used.

A lot of yards around Birmingham sit on a hill, and that shapes how the whole space gets built. Water has to go somewhere, and sometimes the only way to get a flat patio is a retaining wall to hold the ground back.

We design and build under one roof, so the people drawing up the plan know what it takes to install it. The finished yard ends up looking like the design.

Late summer beds look rough. The annuals are about done and everything's faded out.

Fall color is an easy fix here soon. Mums, pansies, snapdragons. Put them in now while the soil's still warm in ground and they'll root in and hold through spring.

We clear out the old, prep the beds, and plant. Tell us which beds you want done and we'll take it from there.

The w**ds you'll be mad about in February are germinating right now.

Poa annua, henbit, chickw**d are w**ds that come up in fall while Bermuda and Zoysia are winding down, then take over once the lawn goes dormant and can't compete. By the time you can see them, a pre-emergent won't do a thing. It has to go down before.

Late September into October is the window here. Our lawn care program covers fertilization, pre- and post-emergent w**d control, plus disease and insect control.

Fertilizing the lawn doesn't do much for the trees growing in it. Turf products stay up in the top couple of inches where the grass roots are. Tree roots go deeper than that, and they spread out farther than people expect, usually well past the edge of the branches. Out there the soil has been getting packed down by mowers for years.

When the heat sets in, the lawns that hold up are the ones with a strong root system and soil that can actually feed them. Everything visible depends on what's happening below the surface.

Watering deeper and less often, keeping the mow height up, and paying attention to the soil will carry a lawn through the worst of an Alabama August.
