After the shell is shot, the concrete has to cure. Curing is not drying. Concrete gains strength through a chemical reaction with water, and that reaction continues for weeks. Losing moisture too fast, particularly in Los Angeles heat and dry air, weakens the finished result and can cause surface cracking.

That is why the shell gets watered during the curing period, and why the schedule builds in time rather than rushing to the next trade.

A Variable Speed Pump Set to One Speed All Day Is Just an Expensive Single Speed Pump

Variable speed pumps save real money, and a surprising number of them are running at a single speed twenty four hours after installation because nobody programmed them properly.

The value is in the physics. Power consumption drops dramatically as speed drops, far more than flow does. So running longer at a lower speed usually moves the same water for a fraction of the energy compared to running short and fast.

Different jobs genuinely need different speeds:

Filtration and turnover. The bulk of the day. This is where the low speed lives, and it is where the savings come from. Slower water also filters more effectively because it spends more time in the media.

Skimming. Needs enough surface flow to actually pull debris to the skimmer. A speed too low leaves leaves floating in place.

Heating. Heaters require a minimum flow rate to fire and run safely. The pump must step up when the heater calls.

Cleaners and features. Pressure side cleaners, in-floor systems, spa jets, and water features each have their own flow requirement.

Priming. A brief high speed period on startup to establish prime cleanly.

The right program depends on your pool volume, plumbing size, filter type, and what equipment is attached. There is no universal setting, which is exactly why so many pumps end up on a default.

A Commercial Pool Is Not a Big Residential Pool

Property managers and HOA boards deal with a different pool problem than homeowners do. The water is the same. Almost nothing else is.

What actually changes at commercial scale:

Bather load is unpredictable. A residential pool sees the same handful of swimmers. A community pool can go from empty to full in an afternoon, and chemistry has to be managed for the spike, not the average.

Your Indoor Countertop Material Will Not Survive Outside

One of the most common outdoor kitchen mistakes is selecting the counter the same way you would select one for a kitchen indoors. Outside, the material faces UV, heat cycling, chlorinated splash, sunscreen, food acids, and irrigation minerals.

How the common options actually behave:

Granite. Dense, heat tolerant, and UV stable. A workhorse outdoors. Darker slabs get very hot in direct sun, which is worth considering for a bar top people lean on.

Porcelain slab. Extremely low absorption, excellent UV and stain resistance, and available in large formats. Edge detailing and fabrication need to be done well because it is less forgiving to install.

Concrete. Highly customizable and can be beautiful. It is porous, so sealing is not optional, and it will develop character, which some people love and some do not.

Quartz. Popular indoors and generally not recommended in direct sun, because the resin binder can discolor and warp with UV exposure. Many manufacturers exclude outdoor use from coverage.

Marble and limestone. Gorgeous and reactive. Acidic food, drinks, and pool chemistry etch them, and near a pool that contact is constant.

Tile over masonry. Durable and repairable, with grout lines as the main maintenance point.

Stainless. Practical for prep zones and drop in components, hot in sun, and it shows everything.

Choose for exposure first, appearance second, and you will still get something beautiful.

Almost Nobody Uses the Deep End as Much as They Think They Will

Depth is one of the first decisions in a new pool and one of the least examined. Tradition says you need a deep end. Actual use often says otherwise.

The sport pool. A consistent shallow to mid depth across most of the pool, typically shallower at both ends and slightly deeper in the middle. This is the most used configuration in modern residential design because people stand, play, and socialize far more than they dive. It also means more usable water for the same footprint.

The traditional deep end. Necessary if you genuinely want diving, and diving carries specific depth, length, and shape requirements that are not negotiable. Worth being honest with yourself about how often that will happen.

The play depth range. Four to five feet is where most adults can stand comfortably while still being able to swim. For families, this range gets used constantly.

The tanning ledge and steps. Very shallow zones that carry more daily use than the deep end in most households.

Things depth actually changes:

Water volume, which affects heating time and chemical demand
Excavation and structural requirements, which affect construction scope
Safety planning for small children, since deeper water changes supervision needs
Resale expectations, which vary by neighborhood and buyer type

Design the depth around how your family will actually spend time in the water, not around what pools looked like when you were growing up.

Turf Around a Pool Solves Three Problems and Creates Two New Ones

Synthetic turf around a pool has become extremely common in Los Angeles, and for good reasons. It also has real considerations that get skipped in the sales conversation.

What it genuinely solves:

No irrigation, which matters here more every year
No grass clippings blowing into the water, which is a real maintenance win
Consistent appearance through summer heat and drought restrictions

What deserves attention:

Heat. Synthetic turf gets significantly hotter than natural grass in direct sun. Next to a pool where people walk barefoot, that is a genuine comfort factor. Shade, lighter infill choices, and product selection all affect it.

Drainage. This is the big one. Turf sits on a compacted base, and near a pool that base is receiving splash out and deck runoff constantly. Without correct base preparation, drainage layers, and a plan for where water actually goes, you get saturation, odor, and settling at the edges.

Chlorinated splash out. Turf near the water gets hit with pool water regularly. Quality products handle it, and the infill choice matters.

Edge detail. The transition between turf and deck is where installations succeed or fail visually. Proper edging keeps it crisp for years.

Static and pet considerations. Worth discussing up front if you have dogs.
