This Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea and I have been besties since 2023, after collecting approximately one metric ton of rainwater she can weep. ๐Ÿฅน

Panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) are known for having sturdier, woodier stems than smooth hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens), which is why they usually hold their blooms much better.

Repeated heavy rains can leave her looking more relaxed for the rest of the season though ๐Ÿ˜•. After the flowers absorb a surprising amount of water, that extra weight causes the stems to flex downward. The blooms will lose that water (over the next rainless day or two) through evaporation and transpiration and will become lighter. BUT they may not lift themselves back to their original position fully. Time will tell. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒธ

๐ŸŒฑ Native Plant Drop: A selection of Connecticut native plants from my recent firefly event is now available. Swipe through to learn about each species, then check the last pics for availability.

Each species in this post is native to our region and brings something unique to the garden; whether thatโ€™s feeding pollinators, supporting caterpillars, providing late-season blooms, or just preferring to live where other plants wonโ€™t grow.

Nature notices what we choose to plant ๐Ÿ and every native plant added replaces a tiny piece of habitat weโ€™ve lost. ๐Ÿ“ฉ For inquiries, please message. โ˜ฎ๏ธ
