That’s one of the fastest ways to create drainage problems, hydrostatic pressure, and eventual foundation damage — even on houses under 20 years old.

The correct material is clean #57 stone.
It lets water move away from the walls instead of pushing against them.

Who recognizes this historic building downtown Sandusky? First correct comment gets $10!

Out on site last week with Kyle, the historical structural engineer we work with on our historic projects.

When you’re dealing with buildings like this, having a structural engineer who understands historic construction is just part of doing the job right. These older structures don’t behave the same as modern ones — the materials, original load paths, and decades of settlement all have to be accounted for.

Working with someone who knows how these buildings were actually built lets us approach the masonry the correct way and keep the integrity of the structure intact. That’s the standard we hold on every historic job we take on.

This is why we preach preventative maintenance! In this situation the building isn’t entirely masonry, but it is still a good reminder. Especially for those who own historic masonry buildings! Stay vigilant, and be proactive.

Don’t ignore the warning signs of water!

If moisture exposure continues unchecked, it can lead to serious long-term damage. Water weakens the concrete blocks over time, causing them to deteriorate, crumble, or spall (flake apart). This also builds hydrostatic pressure against your foundation walls, which can push them inward, create larger cracks, or even cause bowing/structural issues.
