Protect Your Basement from Snow Melt Flooding This Winter!
As the snow melts, it can turn into a flood risk for your basement. Take these steps to keep your home dry and safe
1. Check Your Gutters and Downspouts
Make sure gutters are clear of debris, and downspouts direct water at least 6 feet away from your foundation.
2. Inspect Your Foundation and Basement Walls
Look for cracks and seal them with waterproof caulk or epoxy to prevent water from seeping in.
3. Install or Maintain Your Sump Pump
Test your sump pump to ensure it’s in working order. Consider a backup battery system for power outages.
4. Grade Your Yard Away from Your Home
Ensure the ground slopes away from your home to direct melting snow away from the foundation.
5. Install Window Well Covers
Cover basement windows with clear, waterproof covers to keep snow and water out while still allowing light in.
Don’t wait until it’s too late! Proactive measures now can save you from costly water damage in the spring.
