They added a room onto the house and never checked where the septic was.

No permit on file with the county. Nobody on site knew where the tank or the lines were. Dry weather told the story: stripes in the grass about 8 to 10 feet apart, a rectangular dead patch over the tank and D-box, and two laterals running right under that addition.

You can even go back through drought years on Google Earth and see it.

If you’re buying a house or adding on, find the septic first. Some of us old-timers can still do it without the fancy gear.

When wastewater leaves your home, it settles into three layers inside your tank:

Scum Layer (Top): Fats, oils, and grease float to the surface.

Effluent Layer (Middle): Relatively clear water that exits into your drainfield.

Sludge Layer (Bottom): Solid waste that settles and breaks down over time.

Because that bottom sludge layer never fully disappears on its own, routine pumping every 3–5 years is essential to prevent system backup!
