Always doublecheck the girder truss layout with the length of the perpendicular trusses. The truss company typically sets the hip girders at an even 2’ X ahead increment from the exterior wall.

I started framing at 15 and it kind of sucked.

In the Amish community you graduate at 8th grade and join the workforce. I had two choices, work on a farm or do construction. I hated the smell of cows so picked up a tool belt instead.

When I first started in construction I felt very intimidated onsite. Everyone worked circles around me and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to learn the skills let alone be fast enough.

But all my friends would talk about what they got done the week prior and how their foremens were crazy fast. I just wanted to be cool like that so I made it my goal to become good at framing.

I married my best friend at 18 and bought my first house. Unfortunately $500 a week didn’t pay the bills so had to switch to renting. After 7 years of working hard for my employer I started my own company. I’m incredibly thankful for my boss as he was the one who taught me how to frame and supported me when I started my own business.
I made some crucial mistakes my first year being self employed. I learned quickly from that mistake that budgeting will make or break your business.

Owning my own company has been an incredible blessing as it has allowed my wife and I to move cross country from PA to Oregon in 2019. We eventually had 2 miracle babies after a long road of infertility and now own a home with a small farm.

Why do I keep framing? Because I still love taking a pile of lumber and building something from nothing and it pays the bills. I also enjoy helping new guys get into the trades and sharing the things I’ve learned over the years.

I hope to have my children be a part of the business someday. Currently my son loves my tool belt and plays with my tools every chance he gets. I’m getting him a bag in a couple years. Maybe he’ll be ready to hit the jobsite sooner than me.😉
