Most people do not know if they have a heat pump. Or, they do not understand how it works. This has been a very hot topic with customers lately. Here is a little information to help you understand how to use your heat pump properly, and help you understand how it operates.
First, if you have a heat pump on your thermostat it will have a mode setting for Cool, Heat, & EM Heat.
A heat pump is an all-in-one heating and air conditioning system. In the summer, it pulls heat from the inside of your home and transfers it outside. During the colder months, it does the opposite by collecting heat from the outdoor air and bringing it indoors. Once it gets really cold for several days (30-32 degrees or below)you may have to turn on your emergency heat. This will turn on your furnace which costs a lot more to heat your home. You can turn on your emergency heat by switching it to em heat on your thermostat. Once it gets a little warmer be sure to switch it back to heat so it will turn your heat pump back on and save you a lot of money. We have not turned on our emergency heat yet. I’m sure by tonight or tomorrow we will be forced to turn it on. Our house is very well insulated which probably helps us to go a little longer than most.
