Ever wonder who sets up the cones before road work starts?

That’s us. Before a single hole gets drilled or a lane gets paved, somebody has to close that lane safely and stand watch over it all day. This week our crew was on the Route 7 corridor near Tysons Corner protecting a drilling operation with traffic moving past at highway speed.

It is hot, loud work, and the people doing it are your neighbors. We are proud of them.

It was 11:25 PM on I-95 south between Dumfries and Quantico. Most people were already home. Our crew was not.

The cones, arrow boards and attenuators that slow you down out there are not there to inconvenience you. They exist so the guy working forty feet from your lane gets to finish his shift and drive home to his family, and so you get home to yours.

If you pass a work zone tonight, please ease off. That is all we ask.

Two closures, sixteen hours apart.

Overnight on the terminal roadway at Reagan National. Airport property runs on its own permitting through MWAA, not Arlington County or VDOT, and the facility never closes. That is why the work happens at 2am.

Then daylight on East-West Highway in Takoma Park for a utility excavation. That one is MD 410, a state route, so the permit goes through MDOT SHA rather than the city.

Different agencies, different hours, same standard. Certified flaggers, arrow board ahead of the taper, setup that holds when conditions change.

We fabricate custom construction and work zone signage in-house, install it in the field, and rent the equipment that rounds out your setup: portable message boards, arrow boards, cones, drums, barrels, cone bars, and safety flags. Everything set to MUTCD standards.
