This load is making its way from our cutting shop in Ulm, Montana all the way to a project just outside of Calgary, Alberta. 🇨🇦

This order included:

• 2,600 SF of Random Montana Moss Rock Thin Veneer Flats
• 255 LF of Random Montana Moss Rock Corners

From our yard in Montana to a job site outside Calgary — it’s pretty cool to see Montana stone making its way across the border and becoming part of another great project.

From an idea on a driveway to the job site.

This one has been about a year and a half in the making.

Back in March of last year, I started working with Tiger Butte Custom Homes on a stone blend for a project at the Ranches At Belt Creek. The builder happens to be a good friend of mine that I grew up with, which made this one especially fun to work on.

A year and a half ago, I created a blend by laying out several different stone veneer products on the driveway at my friend’s house. I sent my builder friend a picture. He loved it. The architect loved it, and the response was essentially, “Yep, that’s exactly what we want.”

Since then, we’ve tweaked the blend a little—taking one product out and replacing it with another to get the look just right.

Today, the finished blend finally made it to the job site.

I’m calling this product Moonlight Thin Veneer.

Seeing the pallets sitting in front of the house this morning was pretty cool. What started as a few different stones laid out on a driveway a year and a half ago is now stone going up on a 6,300 square foot home in my hometown.

That’s one of my favorite parts of this business—working with builders and architects to create something specific to a project, then eventually getting to see it become real.

Our stone has a story.

Some relationships just make business easier.

I first connected with Edward Stone during a three-week sales trip through Colorado last spring. At the time, they had shown interest in our Montana Moss Rock, while I was also interested in several of the products they carry.

That first connection turned into a relationship where we’ve now been able to do both — buy their stone for Montana projects and supply them with our Moss Rock.

This load was roughly 1,500 square feet of thin stone veneer between flats and corners. The order itself was a blend of five different stone products. Instead of our Montana customer having to track down multiple suppliers, coordinate products, and figure out logistics, we were able to handle it all through relationships we’ve built over the years and the product knowledge we’ve developed along the way.

That’s one of the things I enjoy most about this business.

Yes, you can find a supplier for just about any type of stone. But knowing what products work together, who has them, how to source them, and how to get everything to the jobsite is a different level of value.

A big thank you to Afton and Zach at Edward Stone for helping get this load together and on the road. And Eric, who had to take off before we got the picture — you’ve been a big part of building this relationship as well.

From Colorado to Montana, we’re continuing to build relationships that make it easier to get the right stone into the right hands.

A great example of what happens when you put yourself in the right places — and build relationships the old-fashioned way.

We were making a delivery to another supplier in the Bozeman area when we drove up on a job in the Bridger Mountains. They were using Montana Moss Rock, but the stone had been purchased through a local broker.

We stopped, introduced ourselves, dropped off a brochure and a few samples, and went on our way.

A few months later, we got a call from the owner.

“Hey, I’ve got a project coming up. Can you help me out?”

That conversation turned into 1,400 SF of Square Rec Flats + 100 LF of corners, delivered direct to the project — roughly a $20,000 stone order.

What makes this one especially cool is how the relationship started. No website form. No Instagram DM. No cold call.

Just showing up, shaking a hand, putting our stone in someone’s hands, and leaving the door open.

That’s one of the things we love about what we do. Our customers find us in all kinds of ways — online, through social media, cold calls, referrals, and sometimes simply because we decided to stop at a job site and introduce ourselves.

This one started with a brochure and a few samples in the Bridger Mountains.

A few months later, we were supplying the stone.

Our stone has a story. And we’re proud to be a part of this one.

A stone delivery to Edward's Stone in Fort Collins, Colorado. 🪨🚛

What makes this delivery a little more unique: we’re not just delivering stone to Edward’s Stone — we’re also loading up stone from them and delivering it to a project we’re supplying in Montana.

A pretty cool example of how relationships in this industry can go both ways.

Also, I got surprised earlier by my girlfriend connecting the gooseneck to the truck for the first time! Proud of her for the many ways she contributes to the business ❤️ She’s always willing to jump in and try something new and I’m thankful for that.

Built on Relationships. Built for the Long Run. 🪨

One of the best parts of building Wide Open Stone has been watching one good relationship turn into another.

For the past couple of years, we’ve had the opportunity to build a great relationship with Glacier Stone and Jacob, who reached out to us and started putting our Montana Moss Rock in front of their customers. What started with a few smaller orders has grown into thousands of square feet of stone, major projects, shipments into Canada, and some exciting projects currently in the works.

And that relationship has opened the door to even more great people and businesses.

Through Glacier Stone, we connected with Jordan at Valour Masonry and Gunnar at GT Masonry. These two are doing some incredible work throughout the Flathead Valley and have built a great partnership of their own to service the growing demand for quality, natural stone masonry in places like Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Lakeside and many other communities by Flathead Lake.

We recently had the chance to all get together, tour the Glacier Stone yard, grab lunch, and talk about some of the projects ahead. We’re already working toward another couple thousand square foot project together.

What stood out most was the quality of the people. Christ centered with a strong emphasis on family and good values. Young and thriving businesses with a lot of ambition and a genuine desire to do things the right way.

That’s the kind of relationships we love to build at Wide Open Stone.

Glacier Stone brings decades of experience and an established name in the industry. Valour Masonry and GT Masonry represent the next generation of talented masons building something special in the Flathead Valley.

Some relationships in business are measured in years. The best ones are measured in trust.

In 2015, I was walking to class at the University of Montana, when I looked down at my phone and saw a purchase order from Montana Rockworks.

At the time, I was running Wide Open Stone part-time and figuring things out as I went. My “production facility” was a chop saw set up behind my mom and dad’s house, where I was cutting thin stone veneer and orders in the 200-600 square foot range.

And fittingly, Facebook reminded me today of the early days— a photo from 11 years ago of me in a mask, cutting rock behind my mom and dad’s house.

That’s where this started.

Fast forward more than 10 years, and it’s pretty special to stand in front of Montana Rockworks with the people we’re still doing business with today.

What started with small thin veneer moss rock orders has grown into a relationship built on trust, consistency, and a lot of stone moving between us.

There’s something pretty cool about looking back at where we started and seeing that some of the same relationships are still there — even as the orders and production capabilities—have grown larger.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Montana Rockworks for more than a decade. I’m especially grateful for the trust they’ve continued to put in Wide Open Stone.

Good businesses are built on good products.

Some of the most valuable work we do never makes it onto the invoice.

Before today’s delivery to Montana Rockworks one pallet wasn’t up to our standards for shipping. Rather than sending it out, we gathered the team, restacked it, tightened the wrap, secured the tie wire, and walked through exactly what a shipment should look like before it leaves our yard.

It turned into a great teaching moment.

At Wide Open Stone, the packaging is part of the product. A well-built pallet protects the stone, keeps everyone safer during transportation, and reflects the level of care our customers can expect from us.

This load is headed to Montana Rockworks, a trusted partner we’ve been proud to work with for more than 10 years. Relationships like these aren’t built overnight—they’re built one quality shipment at a time.

🪨 The best projects often start with a simple online search.

This project on Mill Creek Road, south of Livingston, began when a new customer found us online while searching for Montana Moss Rock thin veneer.

They weren’t looking for another middleman—they wanted to work directly with the source. After a quick conversation, we put together an order of 1,400 square feet of our Square Rec Montana Moss Rock flats along with 100 lineal feet of corners. Next, we coordinated deliveries to match their construction schedule.

The first shipment arrived in late July, with the remainder of the order scheduled for delivery next week to keep the project moving. Because the job site is tucked back in the mountains, the crew met us with a skid steer and trailer to shuttle the stone the rest of the way up the logging roads.

That’s one of the things we enjoy most about this business. Every project is different, and every delivery has its own story. Whether it’s a full truckload or a phased delivery into a remote location, our goal is the same: make sourcing natural stone straightforward, dependable, and on schedule.

We’re grateful for every new relationship that starts with a phone call, an online search, or a referral—and we’re looking forward to seeing this project come together.
