Here's a thought about upgrading your home, whether to improve the home right now, or for the future, as you intend to stay in your home as long as possible.

Most often we focus on those safety upgrades in the bathroom, and that is definitely a good idea. But is that all that you need to do? Perhaps you're not ready for the cost to remodel the bathroom.

Lighting is the other focus that is sometimes overlooked when imroving a home for the long haul. There are three kinds of lighting; ambient, task and accent. Kitchens often can benefit from added task lighting, such as undercabinet and pendant lights over an island.

Lighting under the lower cabinets is not only striking visually, but a great way to add either motion activated light or night lights.

Keep your home in tip-top condition, it's your biggest investment. The many systems that make a home work need updating and repair, from time to time. It's not all about appearance; a well maintained home is a comfortable, cozy and safe haven from the world.

While fresh paint and new flooring are important, they also are part of the ongoing maintenance that our homes need. Many homeowners prefer a double vanity sink, to make morning preps easier and less congested in the master bath. Vanities with 2 sinks generally need a space of at least 60 inches to install 2 sinks for comfortable use.

This homeowner needed to increase the size of their kitchen, and relocate the stove, sink, and have new cabinets installed. We built out where there was a porch, increasing the square footage, and installed new cabinets, countertops, appliances, even an island, and more! This gave the family a much needed boost in space for the kitchen. It was no longer necessary to keep so many items on the countertops.

Whats the deal with "aging in place"? It's an expression that refers to the ability to live in ones own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age or ability level. Basically, it means making the necessary accommodations and renovations to make your home safe and accessible.

Most homes, with the exception of homes with multiple stories, can be modified to make them safe for homeowners as they age. If you are interested in including some of the options for aging in place, check with your contractor before your next home remodel, there are options that can be seamlessly included in any home update.

There's nothing quite like a new kitchen countertop! Whatever your choice of materials, a fresh countertop will give your kitchen a whole new look. We see countertops made from a variety of materials, but the most popular tends to be quartz. Quartz countertops are manufactured stone built from 90-95% crushed natural quartz, combined with 5 - 10% resins and pigments.

The manufacturing process means these materials can be made into shapes for your counters, without needing to cut them from nature. It also means you can get them in a tremenous array of colors and patterns, and are low maintenance, highly resistant to stains and bacteria.

Many additions we build are for a master bedroom with bath. Whether the issue with a home is that it has too few bedrooms and bathrooms, or the rooms are too small for comfort, a small addition can create that bedroom en suite that you've always wanted.

With that addition, you don't have to sell your house and buy a different home - the kids can stay in their schools, jobs are still close by, and the house is worth a lot more with the addition!

Check with your contractor to determine what is the most efficient way to add on to your home. Some build out into the yard, some go up, some remodel the garage into a living space, and if there is a basement, it is a logical place to put a new bedroom and bath.

Many homes have a small bathroom, either because it is a small older home, or it may be a second bathroom for guests. In any case, these small spaces can be furnished with fixtures and materials that complement the room and make it a pleasant, efficient bathroom.

Bath vanities come in an amazing variety of dimensions, and even a small vanity can be installed that has a small countertop area for those essentials we all need at hand.

Toilets are made in a compact size that does not extend as far out into the room, yet you will not be aware that it is any smaller than standard size toilets.

Good quality lighting, clever use of mirrors and even tight-fitting showers can make these small spaces work as hard as the full size bathroom.
