The countertop is one of the most expensive surfaces in a kitchen. It is also one of the most personal. The wrong material for your life looks right in photos and creates friction every day.

These five questions take about fifteen minutes to think through — and they tend to reveal more than three hours of Pinterest research.

1. How do you actually cook? (Not how you wish you cooked.)
2. What light comes into this kitchen?
3. What is already committed — floors, cabinets, hardware?
4. What does daily maintenance look like for you, honestly?
5. Are you optimizing for timeless or for now?

The answers determine whether marble, quartz, quartzite, porcelain, or something else entirely is the right answer for your specific kitchen. Not somebody else’s kitchen. Yours.

The kitchen gets all the stone. The living room gets paint.

Introducing The Warm Oak Kitchen.

White oak. Taj Mahal quartzite. Brushed gold hardware.

The 2019 version of this kitchen was white cabinets, gray countertop, chrome fixtures. The owners came into the showroom and spent two hours holding slabs.

Taj Mahal was the last stone they looked at. It was the easiest decision they made.

In photos it reads almost white. In person, under warm light, it reads the way wood smells — something quieter and more specific than a color.

FT Vocabulary — Episode 03: Honed Stone.

Honed means the stone is ground smooth — but not buffed to a shine.

Polished marble announces itself. You see the veins and the room’s reflection at the same time.

Honed marble is quieter. The veins are the thing. The surface doesn’t compete.

On marble: honed shows etching less obviously than polished, because there’s no high shine to disrupt.

On quartzite, honed feels almost like fabric. It changes how you touch the counter.

Neither is the right answer for everyone. One of them is right for your specific kitchen.

Forest green.

July’s color. The one that changed everything this year.

It’s not the mint of 2017. Not the sage of 2022. This is deeper, richer, more intentional — forest green that works in kitchens, baths, and the spaces between them.

Nobody tells you what to expect.

So here’s what a visit to FT Showroom actually looks like.

You walk in. There’s no sales desk at the door. There’s a floor full of slabs you can actually touch.

We usually start with three questions:
What’s the space? What are you keeping? What are you changing?

From those answers, we pull 4–6 slabs that are worth your time. Not everything on the floor. The ones that actually fit your kitchen.

If you bring paint samples or a cabinet door, we’ll coordinate against them in real light.

Most visits take 45–90 minutes. Most people leave having made a decision they feel completely sure about.
