Friendly PSA: Seen a lot of folks recently on community FB pages asking for ‘handyman’ help. I get it. You want your stuff fixed at a cheaper price than paying a licensed plumber, electrician etc…
The reason these folks charge more is because they know what they’re doing, are insured, and likely won’t burn down or flood your house doing it. If I’m not comfortable and/or knowledgeable about doing something I won’t do it. Period. For your benefit, and mine.
However, I am insured. If I mess something up and cause damage to your house, my insurance covers me for my negligence. It’s a lot of money, but I pay it gladly. In saying that, that also means I’m not the cheapest. I have business overheads and bills to pay, to make sure my business is legal, and above board.
I am not a Liability Limited Company (LLC). I am a sole proprietorship. Anyone claiming they are more knowledgeable, worthy of a higher rate, or better insured because they are an LLC, is making false claims. All it means is that they, personally, cannot be directly responsible financially for a lawsuit against their business. (There are caveats to this but that’s another story).
I stand by my work. And the only advertising I do, is with my business card. I also require an initial payment up front to lock in scheduling and cover materials.
If you are uncomfortable with any of this, please go hire Joe Schmo with a toolbag and see how that goes. I’m currently 6-8 weeks out on work. I can guarantee Jo Schmo ain’t. Maybe ask yourself why?
