17 Seconds Back to the Future

A quick look back at one of our older projects—African mahogany, clean lines, and a mid-century style that still manages to feel current.

P.S. In a mid-century kitchen built around 1960, a drawer used just four times a day would be nearing its 100,000th use today.

Back in Black ⚡️… but the biggest change isn’t the color.

With the walk-in pantry removed and the wall opened up, there was room for a large island with seating on two sides—and a much stronger connection to the rest of the home.

What was once a familiar golden-toned kitchen is now finished in rich black, balanced by light countertops and warm oak accents.

A few notable details:

• Large island with seating on two sides and plenty of storage
• Tall pantry cabinets and a countertop storage tower
• Black farmhouse sink
• Custom range hood with an oak accent

I didn’t catch this one before demolition began, but the early construction photos still show the scale of the layout change.

Cooking has given me a lot of opinions…

How much ventilation is enough—and does a deeper hood actually work better?
Is 36 inches really the right counter height?
How much uninterrupted prep space do you truly need?
Are extra-large drawers worth it—or a waste of space?
Do rollout trays really belong everywhere?
How much space do you actually need around an island?
Where should the rollout garbage go—and is one enough?
Are all those cabinet accessories—spice pullouts, dividers, automatic-opening garbage, etc.—actually worth the cost?
Which door profiles are easier to clean?

Drawings show where everything fits. Cooking shows whether it actually works.

Still one of the coolest sinks I've had the chance to build around.

This carved limestone sink is definitely not something you see every day, and it became a pretty incredible focal point for this New Prague kitchen.

Photos: Goodbye Golden Oak

This kitchen was transformed from its original golden oak design into an updated space built around the way this family lives today.

We are grateful for the opportunity to build the custom cabinetry for this remodel alongside some talented local professionals.

Cedar Point Designs led the design and project, while Berger Interiors helped bring the space together with flooring, countertops, tile work, and selections. It was a pleasure working alongside both teams to help bring this vision to life.
