Rocket decided to soar up this tree yesterday in Bridgeport and realized this morning that he couldn't quite get back down. Our very own Brian Kralovic was able to reach him and provide him with a safe landing. Not a bad way to start a Saturday. Have a great day everyone!

Do you have any sycamores on your property?

If you have ever walked through a fall forest and spotted a tree that looks like it is wearing camouflage, that is almost certainly an American sycamore. No other native tree in the eastern forest looks quite like it, and the reason comes down to something simple: its bark cannot stretch.

Most tree bark yields to a growing trunk by stretching, splitting, or filling in gradually. Sycamore bark is different. It is more rigid and far less elastic than the bark of other trees, so instead of stretching, it shatters into puzzle-piece plates and sheds them off entirely, exposing the smoother, paler bark underneath. That is what produces the tree's signature mottled pattern of green, brown, and creamy white, and why the upper trunk often turns almost ghostly white with age.

The exfoliating bark is only part of what makes this tree remarkable. The American sycamore is considered the most massive native hardwood in eastern North America, with trunks that can exceed 10 feet in diameter on the largest trees, some historical specimens measured near 13 feet across. Few native trees come close to that kind of girth.

That size is also what makes the old stories about settlers living inside sycamores true rather than exaggerated. Because sycamore trunks decay from the heart outward while the outer wood stays alive, large old trees frequently become hollow while continuing to grow. Recorded accounts describe a Shenandoah Valley settler and his two sons living for most of a year inside a hollow sycamore in what is now Clarke County, Virginia, in 1744. Trees of that size gave pioneers space that a small cabin could barely match.

Next time you pass one, look up. The higher the trunk, the whiter the bark tends to be, because those upper sections have shed the most layers and been exposed to the air the longest. It is a tree that grows by shedding its own skin, and it has been doing that for centuries longer than most of us realize. 🌳🍂
