June is Indiana Limestone History month and I can tell you all of the great things about Indiana Limestone or you can just come on through our newest Welcome Center and see it for yourself!

Indiana Cut Stone was thrilled to be apart of this legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway themed project located in Terre Haute, IN with our good friends from the Otto Baum Company, Inc..

Not only will you see Indiana Limestone (the best part in my personal opinion) but it is also filled a modern playground with a zip line and climbing tower, making it an ideal stop for kids to play and stretch during long trips along the interstate. Go check it out!

Increasing Demand

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the Great Boston Fire of 1872 reshaped how Americans thought about building materials. Masonry held up far better than wood or iron in the aftermath — and limestone held up best of all.

Two major commissions that decade — the Indiana Statehouse and the Chicago City Hall — cemented Indiana Limestone's reputation for weather resistance, ease of carving, consistent quality, plentiful supply, and broad acceptance among the public and architectural community alike.

By the closing decades of the 19th century, Indiana Limestone was being specified for a steadily growing list of public buildings. The number of quarries doubled between 1889 and 1895, and so did the fabrication shops. Banks, retail stores, hospitals, churches, private homes, and office buildings — many in the eclectic styles of the day — all called for more of the fine-grained, light-colored stone.

Indiana Limestone History Month🥳

Long before Indiana joined the Union in 1816, pioneer settlers were already putting the region's light-colored, fine-grained native stone to work — using it for cabin foundations, door sills, milling burrs, and grave markers. Early quarrymen separated blocks from the deposit using long star drills and wedges. The first organized quarrying operation on record opened in 1827 in Southern Indiana, just outside Stinesville.

When the North-South and East-West railroads pushed into Southern Indiana around the middle of the 19th century, demand for Indiana Limestone took off. Architects of the era were searching for a light, neutral-toned stone to suit the popular Revival styles, and the railroads themselves needed durable stone for bridge piers and the ambitious new terminals going up in growing cities.

This period also brought major leaps in technology. Gang saws replaced the old two-man crosscut saws used to cut blocks into slabs, and the arrival of the channeling machine at the quarry face allowed the young industry to double and even triple its output in just a few years.
