Last night, we had the privilege of celebrating Dan Griffin’s retirement with a well-deserved retirement party, honoring an exceptional career at State Electric and across the electrical construction industry. Dan’s distinguished career spans more than 45 years, including 34 years at Broadway Electrical Construction, where he rose from the field into executive leadership, followed by 12 years as a key member of State Electric’s management team.

Dan was instrumental in the growth of State Electric’s Commercial Division and played a significant role in delivering some of Boston’s most high-profile commercial, institutional, life science, healthcare, and residential projects. He brought a rare combination of hands-on field experience, executive leadership, and a steadfast commitment to quality, safety, and client satisfaction. We are deeply grateful for Dan’s leadership, mentorship, and lasting contributions, and we wish him nothing but the best in a well-earned retirement.

On 8/4 Eversource mobilized State Electric’s storm restoration crews to their Hadley, MA Area Work Center (AWC) after Tropical Storm Isaias caused severe damage across the East Coast. After a few days restoring power from the Hadley AWC, our 9 crews comprised of 24 people were repositioned to the Pittsfield, MA AWC.

Shortly thereafter, on 8/7 Eversource redeployed our crews to the Torrington, CT AWC. Connecticut experienced even more damage than Massachusetts did with 685,000 outages statewide. So, after our work was done in Massachusetts, the crews headed south where there were still numerous customers in Connecticut still without power. Out of the Torrington AWC, our crews mostly worked in Northwestern Connecticut in Washington and New Canaan. Finally, after an arduous 11 days on storm, on 8/14 we were released and every one of our crews returned home safely.

One of the highlights from the trip was the celebration our team had for first-year line apprentice Derek Burnette’s first storm restoration efforts. They ordered a cake for him and Corporate VP Jon Koning presented it to Derek. After a short speech, it slid off the platter, flipped 360 degrees, only to land in the parking lot right side up. Jon subsequently told Derek that it is a good omen for a safe and happy career. We also want to recognize Dave Ransom for his continued exceptional performance, still working and climbing poles at 70 years old! We would like to thank Dave for his many years of service and how he has been a great leader and mentor to everyone on State Electric’s storm crews.

At State Electric, safety is always our number one priority and with the current COVID-19 pandemic, additional measures were put in place to ensure our worker’s health and wellness. Along with the thousands of people in Massachusetts and Connecticut whose power was restored by our team, we would like to thank our crews for their outstanding work and staying safe during these long 11 days!

Additionally, after attempting to mobilize our crews in response to Hurricane Laura, the number of power outages down south were not high enough to warrant bringing in Northeastern storm crews. However, on Friday 8/28 our crews mobilized again to Eversource’s Newtown AWC after a system passed through causing 40,000 outages in the area. Our team worked a total of 1,120 man-hours until demobilizing on Sunday 8/30. We are in the midst of a record busy Atlantic hurricane season that’s just entering peak time, so our crews are always ready to mobilize wherever we are needed. As always, safety in every step!

While most of us were enjoying the New Year’s festivities, State Electric’s storm restoration crews were busy restoring power in Western Massachusetts. Early Monday morning (12/30), our crew of 25 mobilized to Eversource MA's Hadley and Springfield service districts after a major ice storm knocked out a lot of the electricity in the area.

They worked long 17/18hr days with extreme caution restoring primary and secondary power to many of Eversource’s customers. Icy conditions are some of the most dangerous to work in with the treacherous roads and limbs/branches falling from the ice buildup. In total, the storm brought over .5” of ice making it especially challenging. State Electric’s storm restoration crews did an excellent job working safely as an integrated team to play a major role in getting the power efficiently restored. Mid-Wednesday morning (1/1), our team was finally able to return home safely to their families and celebrate the new year.

In late October 2019, State Electric’s Commercial Division completed the electrical core & shell and fit-out of Akamai’s Global Headquarters at 145 Broadway, Cambridge in partnership with Turner Construction. Akamai's cutting edge 19-story, 480,000 SF office has many unique features that include the “Aka-Mile” LED light fixture, numerous exterior cantilevers, 350 conference/meeting rooms, 19 different floor plates, amphitheater-style seating areas, libraries, full cafeteria, kitchen on every floor, and Global Network Operations and Broadcast Operations Command Centers.

Under the leadership of Project Manager Jim Ryan, Core & Shell General Foremen Kevin Demarco, Fit-Out General Foreman Juan Ramos, and Assistant Project Manager Matt Goyette, our team did an outstanding job executing this dynamic project. With the aggressive schedule, our craft labor peaked at 90 electricians and it took a highly focused effort to meet the target completion date.

The most challenging part of the project was the complexity of the lighting. Most notably being the one-mile LED fixture of continuous illumination with custom angles and miters that traverses the “Aka-Mile’s” stairwells and hallways.

The 145 Broadway – Akamai project is State Electric’s largest office core & shell/fit-out job completed to date and our upper management has recognized our project team for their strong performance: Project Manager Jim Ryan, Core & Shell General Foremen Kevin Demarco, Fit-Out General Foreman Juan Ramos, Assistant Project Manager Matt Goyette, VDC Coordinator Rocco Capalino, and Foremen Chris Goodwin, Keith Borsari, Manny Bettencourt, Mike Hartford, Mike Mullen, Rodney Cepeda, Sean Callaghan, and Sen Chen.
