What the untrained eye would presume to be a strong healthy oak tree came down due to wind gusts.
This NJ native tree, Scarlet Oak (Quercus coccinea), did show signs of compromised heartwood which was evident by the ants.

Here’s some media from an Oak Tree removal that we did today.

The tree was in severe decline and we gave it a professional farewell.
We exposed a Carpenter Ant colony complete with pupae, brood, workers, and THE QUEEN!
Once you see the ants it’s too late however the ants are not the cause of the tree going into severe decline.
In this case, I suspect the addition of a garage a few years ago to have produced root zone stress which then compromised the heart wood.
The Oak Tree had significant internal decay prior to the ant colony moving in because carpenter ants need softened, compromised wood to establish a nest.
