The Thames Barrier is a movable flood defense spanning 520 meters across the river, protecting 125 square kilometers of central London from tidal surges, and safeguarding roughly 1.4 million people. Today the river was very low, but during severe weather or high tidal surges, the gates rotate 90 degrees into a vertical position, to create a solid wall against the water. In non-hazard times, the 10 steel gates sit flat on the riverbed to allow ships to pass. It has been an iconic - and essential - component of flood protection for the city since 1982. The gorgeous ’Green Dock’ park encapsulates a contaminated channel that was once part of the city’s docklands, creating space for wildlife and pollinators in this hot urban environment.

Today’s foray was to the 60m long lido (swimming pool) at Parliament Hill. From 6-8pm it is adults only, which is great because we watched about a thousand kids and parents streaming out before our session. The bottom of the pool is metal panels, maybe to warm it up in winter? Will report back. Hoping this becomes a tradition while we are here! (FYI - I thought people from Hawaii were good at changing under towels but these folks are professional level.)

Sunny solstice and Father’s Day. After a great breakfast on the South Bank, we ventured too far into tourist London. But the excursion ended with a new guitar, so not all bad!

King’s Cross is a playground for architects: BIG’s new Google HQ, Allison Brooks, David Chipperfield, Fumihiko Maki, John MacAslan, and so many others contribute to a lively street and skyline. Great tour yesterday with The London Ambler.

Mashup of two of my favorite things - books and canalboats. Why not shop for books in a floating palace of bright shelves, antique rugs, and leafy plants? Adjacent narrowboats offer vintage tees, vinyl records, ice creams, and fortune telling; a perfect afternoon in Kings Cross.

Marylebone to Regent’s Park: bakeries, bookshops, Boots, and a Serpentine Pavilion in deadweight brick. Across the garden, the work by Jesús Rafael Soto was more inviting.

An evening garden party at The Charterhouse, once a plague pit, then medieval monastery, dismantled by Henry VIII and sold to a Tudor merchant and expanded. Gorgeous gardens, a block from our flat in the centre of London.

Day 2: A visit to Novelty Automation, where a few tokens will decide whether an object is Art, give you the experience of an instant Eclipse, recount the story of a bedbug finding its way to a deluxe apartment in the sky, or determine if you are cut out to work at the Amazon Fulfillment Centre. Miniature worlds!

Exploring the Barbican today. Bits of 2000 years’ history here, from the Roman wall c. 200 AD to the post-WWII 1960s housing designed by Chamberlin Powell and Bon, to the temporary installation of a kiva at the centre of one plaza. The word barbican comes from the Low Latin word Barbecana, which referred to a fortified outpost or gateway, such as an outer defence of a city - appropriate for this walled garden housing.

Day 1: Postman’s Park (memorials to those who lost their lives saving others), a horde of mudlarkers at low tide on the Thames, Tate Modern for the Tracey Emin retrospective (with a schoolroom’s worth of teenaged girls), Giacometti in the tanks below the Tate tower, fabulous falafel lunch. Not a bad start!
