September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, and one of the most important things we can do is learn how to recognize when someone may be struggling.
In the trades, people get very good at pushing through.
Long hours.
Physical pain.
Stress at home.
Financial pressure.
Travel.
Layoffs.
Injuries.
Exhaustion.
And sometimes the person having the hardest time is also the person saying, “I’m fine.”
Warning signs can look different from person to person, but changes matter. Pay attention if someone suddenly starts withdrawing from the crew, missing work, acting unusually angry or reckless, talking about hopelessness or being a burden, increasing alcohol or substance use, or talking about death or not being around.
At Shouldice Industrial Manufacturers and Contractors, Inc., we believe looking out for one another is part of the job.
You do not have to diagnose someone.
You do not have to fix everything.
You just have to notice when something changes and care enough to ask.
Try:
“You haven’t seemed like yourself lately. Everything okay?”
Then listen.
Sometimes the most important piece of safety equipment on the jobsite is another person who is paying attention.
If you or someone you know needs immediate emotional or crisis support, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
Notice it. Ask about it. Take it seriously.
Built to carry the load — but not alone.
