Prep on old wrought iron isn't just a step—it’s 90% of the job. 🛠️

When dealing with old wrought iron, prep work is everything. Skip it, and the rust wins. Take the time, and you get a finish that lasts another century.

Here’s a quick behind-the-scenes look at the before and after of prepping intricate metalwork:

The Floss Method: Wrapping steel wool around the tightest curves and pulling back and forth—just like dental floss—to clean out decades of rust and grime in spots a sander can't touch.

Surface Cleaning: Knocking down loose paint and oxidation until the metal is raw, smooth, and ready to bond.

The Reveal: See how much depth and crisp detail comes back once the buildup is gone.
Good restoration isn't about rushing to the topcoat; it’s about making sure the base is rock solid.

Drop a 🛠️ in the comments if you’ve ever had to prep metal the hard way!

Why details matter behind finished doors 👇

Not all wood is treated equal, and knowing how to prep each material is the difference between custom cabinets that look good today vs. cabinets that last for decades. Here’s a quick peek into our process on this build:

🌊 Marine-Grade Plywood Boxes:
We applied a UV exterior sealer to the interior only. For the exterior? We left it breathable. Since it’ll be fully covered by the countertops and exterior painted panels, keeping one side breathable ensures that if moisture ever finds its way in, the wood can naturally release it without trapping mold or causing rot.

🪵 Sapele Wood Prep:
Sapele is insanely dense, which makes it gorgeous—but tough for primer to stick to. To get maximum adhesion: We thinned down 094 primer by 20% so it penetrates deep into the grain. Sanded it back down.
Applied a second full coat.

Why two coats? Thinning primer breaks down its bond slightly, so coat #1 secures the deep bond into the wood, and coat #2 creates the perfect smooth base layer for paint.

Extra work? Absolutely. Worth it? 100%. 🛠️✨
Save this for your next custom build!

Day 1 of converting our oil base trim to latex!

Latex finishes are ideal for rental homes because they're so easy to touch up. Applying one coat after tenants move out will be a breeze.

Oil base trim gets stubborn with decades of paint.

This home has been painted many times over the last 40 years. Because of lead paint regulations, sanding isn’t an option.

We start with careful hand scraping to remove anything loose. Then we use Benjamin Moore 094 Oil Primer — a slow-drying primer that chemically heats up helping loosen the remaining layers.

Once the primer fully cures (3–4 days), we’ll skim coat any uneven areas to create a smooth surface before finish paint.

Old homes take the right prep — and prep is everything. 👏
