One of the perks of road work is that the job can take you somewhere new.

Out-of-town work breaks up the routine. You get a different jobsite, a different part of the state, and travel pay while you’re there.

For the right kind of person, that is a pretty good part of the job.

Around here, a dirty truck is a good sign. If our logo's covered in dust and asphalt residue, that truck's been out building roads across Arkansas, it’s proof that the work is getting done.

Arkansas made, Arkansas paved. One dirty truck at a time.

At Atlas we’re always watching out for the guy next to us.

If he steps wrong or misses something up ahead, someone is close enough to catch it. That's the whole reason crews walk together instead of spreading out.

Somebody's always got your back, and you've got theirs.

Jack Kinder is 71 years old and he’s still showing up to work every day as our shop foreman.

Ask him (or any of our team) why they keep showing up, and they won’t tell you it’s the job, it’s the people. In the day to day work or out on the road, that’s when you really find out who will be there when things get hard, and who’s got your back.

That kind of trust doesn’t come with the job, it’s something you earn. For our crew, they stopped being coworkers a long time ago, now they’re family.

He's watching more than you’d think back there.

Screed height, mat thickness, how the asphalt’s coming off the auger, all of it gets checked and adjusted constantly, so the driver behind him (and the future drivers on the road) never feel a single bump.

Herbert Hudson has spent 21 years figuring out what makes things run: semis, pavers, rollers, milling machines, whatever rolls through the shop. New equipment doesn’t intimidate him, it’s just a new thing to learn.

When he’s building his team, he’s not looking for someone who dives straight in. He wants someone who studies it first and gets familiar with it before they pick up a wrench.

Equipment can be learned, but curiosity can’t be taught. That’s the kind of people we look for at Atlas.

These guys know the work. They know each other. They know what has to happen next.
