The modern windshield chip repair process used by NOVUS Glass was invented by Dr. Frank Werner.The Invention StoryThe Frustration: In the late 1960s, Dr. Frank Werner grew tired of completely replacing his windshields. He frequently drove through the rough, stone-prone terrain of Wyoming and Colorado for ski trips, resulting in three broken windshields in a short span of time.The Collaboration: Driven to find a way to fix small chips without throwing away the entire windshield, Dr. Werner partnered with chemical engineer Bill Wiele. Together, they developed a system to inject a specialized, clear resin into the damaged glass that optically matched the original windshield.Bringing it to the MarketCommercialization: In 1972, Dr. Werner licensed the patent rights to his associate, Gerald (Gerry) Keinath.The Birth of NOVUS: Keinath started a business out of his basement to market the new technology. He eventually named the business NOVUS (the Latin word for "new" or "innovative"), which grew into a global franchise and pioneered the "Repair First, Replace When Necessary" philosophy.
