🌿 SPOT IT BEFORE YOU TOUCH IT: Poison Ivy!

"Leaves of three, let it be!” is a good rule to remember when you’re working or relaxing around your property.

Poison ivy can show up along wood lines, garden edges, fences, trails, and other less-maintained areas. Contact with the plant’s urushiol oil can cause an itchy, uncomfortable rash for many people.

🍃 Learn to recognize its three-leaflet pattern
🧤 Avoid touching or pulling it with bare hands
🐕 Remember—the oil can transfer from tools, clothing, gloves, and even pet fur
🔥 Never burn poison ivy, as the smoke can carry irritating oils

Help Your Lawn Beat the Summer Heat! 🌱☀️

Hot August weather can put a lot of stress on Maine lawns. A few simple changes to your routine can help keep your grass healthier and reduce the chance of it going dormant:

💧 Water deeply:Water once or twice a week for about an hour rather than giving your lawn frequent, light watering. Deep watering encourages roots to reach farther into the soil.

🌱 Mow it high: Set your mower as high as it will comfortably mow—around 4 inches. Taller grass helps shade the soil and protect the lawn during hot, dry conditions.

☀️ Skip the high-noon mow: Avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day. Mowing already heat-stressed grass can add even more stress.

🌱 Sometimes the lawn problem you see above ground actually starts underground.

Take a look at this lawn. The yellow areas had a very shallow root system and heavily compacted soil. During a simple screwdriver test, we could only push the screwdriver about 1 inch into the soil.

But along the greener areas near the driveway? Completely different story. The soil was much less compacted, and the screwdriver easily went down about 6 inches. Those areas also had deeper roots and noticeably greener turf. 💚

That’s a great example of why soil conditions and root depth matter. Compacted soil can make it harder for water, air, and nutrients to reach the root zone—and a stressed root system often shows up as stressed grass above ground.

Don’t just look at the grass when diagnosing a struggling lawn. Sometimes you have to look at what’s happening underneath it.

This is also one reason core aeration can be an important part of improving compacted lawns.

Beat the summer heat and keep your lawn lush! ☀️🌱

When temperatures soar, give your grass a fighting chance with these essential heat-wave tips:

Mow Higher: Keep your mower blades elevated. Mowing too short exposes the soil and "cooks" the grass, especially near edges and driveways.

Deep Watering Every Other Day: Instead of light daily watering, water deeply every couple of days. This encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil searching for moisture, making your lawn stronger and more heat-tolerant.

Keep it tall, water deep, and enjoy a greener lawn all summer long! 👍
