Peace Rocks Project Spreading messages of Peace that ripple out around the world…one thought...one rock at a time.

Peace Rocks is an Outreach Project and Service Team that started at Unity of Bandon and functions under its umbrella. Participation is open to anyone anywhere in the world who wishes to promote peace. We believe that every person on the planet has the power to change the world. We encourage people to paint words, images, and messages of peace, hope, love, and joy on ordinary rocks and distribute t

hem all over the world. We encourage people to focus their attention on the idea of peace and to share that message with others. The idea of peace rocks originated with Jane Clark (October 10, 1944 - December 15, 2007). As part of the celebration of the Season for Peace & Nonviolence, a Peace Concert was planned at Unity of Bandon in April 2006. It featured the newly formed community Peace Choir as well as a number of other local musicians. As part of that celebration, Jane decided to paint the word "peace" on some rocks and pass them out to all who attended the concert. Little could she have known....she started an international movement! In 2010, the folks at Unity of Bandon decided to paint more peace rocks and distribute them around the community. Since then 1000's of rocks have been painted with messages of peace and they are found all over the world. These treasures are “Peace Rocks” and folks at Unity of Bandon located in the little community of Bandon-by-the-Sea (population 3000) along the southern Oregon coast have been painting them by the 100’s. Using non-toxic paints, images, words, and messages of peace are painted on rocks gathered from the local beaches and rivers.

We'll be taking a little break over the next few months and will start up with our gatherings to paint rocks after the new year. In the meantime, we have still have a stash of painted rocks if you want to share them with friends or strangers or take them with you when you travel! Due to your requests, we will be planning more daytime gatherings as well.

Part 2 of Cranberry Parade information.
TIME TO ARRIVE

*Don't be alarmed at the time. We are not in competition for a prize (ribbon). Please get there between 9:15 and 9:30 to get parked, situated, get a basket of rocks, visit with friends.

(Officially, check-in starts at 8AM with judging beginning at 9:15. The parade up Hwy 101 and through Old Town begins at 10AM.)

PARADE ROUTE

You don't need to memorize the route, just follow the parade! ;) This seems more complicated than it is. In the past, the parade seemed to disperse by Coffee Warehouse or Edgewater. People find their way back to their cars. These directions take you back

* PARADE ROUTE

Start at 9th St SW, turn left on HWY 101, go downhill and turn left on Delaware Ave, turn left on First St, turn left on Edison Ave,

turn right on 8th St SW, turn left on Franklin Ave, turn left on 9th St SW.

*June and Scott will drop off 2 wagons of rocks down the hill (for safety) around 9:15ish past the city hall. Scott will pull one of them in parade. Donna will pull the other. If someone wants to trade off with her, great!

★ wagon pullers to be down at city hall before 10 a.m.

★ We need 2 people to carry banner. (June and Annette will. )

LINE UP

*At start of parade, leaving 9th street, Cleone will lead in her car, followed by banner, followed by volunteers with baskets of rocks.

* When we get to city hall, wagons will be there for re-filling baskets and will walk in the parade with us.

Baskets will be refilled from wagons as needed.

* Amy and Sylvia will be stationed along parade route with more boxes of rocks to put in wagons. Not sure where exactly they will be, but look out for them waving wildly, chasing the wagons.
(Update - a box will be at Bandon Inn)

* Scott will have parked his truck at the gravel lot across from Warehouse Coffee so we don't have to carry banner, baskets, and pull the wagons back uphill.

PART ONE
Hi, This is long, so will send in 2 parts about our participation in the Cranberry Parade, Saturday, Sept. 13.
Thank you, Peace Rocks Project parade Volunteers!!
Here is the condensed version:
* Peace Rocks Project is non-political so please don't wear shirts or hats with political statements. Cheery, friendly is nice.
* Check in location is in front of Bandon High School.
* Arrive between 9:15 and 9:30 a.m. to get organized.
* Parade starts at 10 leaving 9th street onto Hwy 101

LONG VERSION
Here are some things to note:
CHECK-IN, GATHER
* Check in location is in front of Bandon High School. You might have to walk a short distance from where you park. Carpool if you can.
*Cleone will be driving her car in the parade. Look for Cleone or familiar faces to find out where our place in line is.
*- The sign-in sheet at the church had a line to check off agreement to "hold harmless". If you're not on that list, you can check with parade coordinator, Jan, but I don't think they are strict about this.
"To participate in the parade, all participants must check in upon arrival at the parade check in location and present a signed
copy of the “Hold Harmless and Release” form for each entry."
So I'm not sure if the signed one for Unity is a blanket for everyone. We added people last year, it wasn't an issue. Just wanted you to be aware if someone asks you to sign.

June Lemler Davies has been down with covid but should be all better soon. Thank you Robin Borman Haruna , Donna Belt and Amy for stepping up. We still need volunteers to walk in the parade to hand out rocks. There are a couple other floats that some of our volunteers are in, so our volunteer pool has dwindled. Thanks!

We are in need of more peace rocks so will be writing messages on rocks this Sunday, September 7 after service - join us to spread messages of Peace and Love!
We are also in need of people to walk in the parade on September 13 or have a box of rocks along the parade route for the walkers to replenish their supplies - please sign up at Unity of Bandon or drop a message below! It's a lot of fun!

Peace Rocks is getting rocks ready to hand out in the Cranberry Parade in September. We have over 850 ready so far. Last year we had over 1,000 and ran out. People love to get these.
We'll need more rocks ready and need people to sign up to walk in parade
We also supply them to the visitor center and anyone who wants to take some to spread peace.
A special thank you to Amy and her son, and George for bringing us rocks from the beach to replenish our supply of blanks! June brought 3 boxes of them home to base paint to make it faster to put wording on next "paint night" at Unity Church Thursday, July 10 at 6:30 p.m.
If anyone has any old cans (that are still good) of spray paint in their garage and want to get rid of them, we can use them to base paint rocks. Just put them under the table by window where rocks are stored. June will pick them up to base paint more.

Thursday, June 12, 6:30 p.m. we will be writing words on base-painted rocks. We won't have enough rocks ready to cover both the 4th of July parade and the Cranberry Parade, so will Not be in the 4th of July parade.
We need more small rocks to base paint. If anyone is going to walk a beach, please consider picking up small rocks with at least one side flat enough to write on. Thanks!
