Facility Planning Checklist:
☑ Team practices and competition schedules
☑ Physical education classes
☑ Camps and summer programs
☑ School events and assemblies
☑ Community use
☑ Tournaments and special events
☑ Time required for the flooring work itself
☑ Time the facility needs before returning to normal use

The technical flooring decision is only one piece of the project.

Scheduling matters because even the right work can become difficult when there is not enough time to complete it properly within the facility's operating calendar.

A new athletic floor gets plenty of attention while it is being installed.

Then the doors open.

Practices begin. Games are scheduled. Classes move in. Equipment crosses the court. Events fill the calendar.

That is when the next phase begins. The life of an athletic floor might look something like this:

Installation
↓
Regular facility use
↓
Cleaning and routine care
↓
Condition monitoring
↓
Scheduled maintenance
↓
Recoating, repair, or refinishing when appropriate
↓
More years of use

Installation is an important milestone, but it is not the finish line.

Long-term flooring performance depends on what happens throughout the surface's life.

MYTH: If an athletic floor still looks good from the bleachers, there is nothing to think about.

REALITY: Appearance is only one part of understanding floor condition.

Facility teams also have to consider how heavily the floor is being used, whether traffic patterns have changed, what maintenance has already been performed, and what the surface will be expected to handle next.

A clean, attractive court does not automatically tell you everything about its maintenance needs.

The same is true in reverse. A worn floor doesn't automatically mean it needs to be replaced.

A professional evaluation helps separate appearance from the bigger picture of your flooring.

For spaces athletes use every day, that distinction matters.

When someone says, “Our gym floor needs maintenance,” there is still an important question to answer:

What kind?

Here is a simple way to think about the conversation.

Needs regular care?
Cleaning and routine maintenance may be the focus.

Needs additional surface protection?
Recoating may be considered as part of the floor's maintenance cycle.

Needs more extensive surface work?
Refinishing may become the appropriate conversation.

Has localized damage?
Repair may need to be evaluated separately from work on the entire floor.

Has the floor reached a much larger decision point?
Replacement can eventually enter the discussion.

The correct answer depends on the actual floor, its condition, use, maintenance history, and future needs.

That is why the process should begin with evaluation, not assumptions.

The question is not simply, “Does it need work?” It is, “What does this particular floor need?”

Consider what one school gym might accommodate in a typical week:

1. Physical education classes
Students may be moving across the surface throughout the school day.

2. Team practices
Basketball, volleyball, and other programs can add hours of repeated athletic use.

3. Games and competitions
Higher activity periods bring athletes, staff, equipment, and spectators into the space.

4. Assemblies and school events
The same floor may suddenly serve an entirely different purpose.

5. Community programs
Some facilities continue operating long after the school day ends.

All of that activity matters when evaluating traffic, maintenance needs, available downtime, and long-term floor planning.
