Ever wonder why mulch steams?

When organic matter in mulch is piled together, they begin to break down through the actions of microorganisms, primarily bacteria and fungi. These microorganisms generate heat as they consume the organic matter, a process kown as composting.

As the temperature within the mulch pile rises, the water content of the organic matter evaporates and rises to the surface, creating steam. This steam is often visible on cool mornings or evenings and can be mistaken for smoke. The heat generated by the composting process can be quite significant, with temperatures reaching up to 160°F in some cases.
