Associate Matt Ellingson hosted the 4th Year Urban Design Studio class from North Dakota State University for the third year in a row. The Studio's main project is a Baltimore based urban design project that focuses on the redevelopment of Harborplace and the Inner Harbor. The students also toured the recently completed Rash Field which is a Mahan Rykiel project.

For designers, experiencing a material at its source is as inspiring as it is informative. Standing in the quarry, seeing the scale of the stone, its natural variation, and how it is extracted and crafted, deepens our understanding of the material’s character and capabilities. Those insights spark ideas and help turn a design vision into a buildable reality.

This month, Jingcheng (Jason) Wu traveled to Passau, Germany, to visit and follow that journey firsthand, from quarry to fabrication, as the granite for an interactive fountain designed by takes shape for one of our urban park projects.

We had a wonderful time hosting a walking tour as part of Doors Open Baltimore this weekend.

Created by the BALTIMORE ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION, Doors Open Baltimore invites people to discover the buildings, spaces, and neighborhoods that shape our city. During our tour, participants explored the park's design, history, and evolution while experiencing firsthand how thoughtful landscape architecture can create places for recreation, connection, and community.

It was great seeing people out using the park - despite the rainy weather!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and spent part of their weekend exploring Baltimore through the lens of design.

We're excited to be part of Jones Falls 2076, a new exhibition at The Peale Museum that imagines alternative futures for Baltimore's historic river. Mahan Rykiel Associates contributed Commonspace as Connector, a vision for reconnecting people, ecology, and community along the Jones Falls. We invite you to explore this thought-provoking exhibition and the many creative perspectives on Baltimore's future.

Opening reception October 15, with the exhibition running through November 22.

Yesterday afternoon, the MRA team celebrated the close of another fiscal year with a happy hour at Birroteca — and our Philly office came down to join the fun!

We’re grateful for another year of award-winning work, wonderful collaborations with our clients, and, most of all, the talented people who make it all happen.

Mahan Rykiel Annual Crab Feast- Cathy, who retired 3 years ago, welcomed us back to her beautiful home on the water. Weather could have been better but great to see everyone, food was great, great Maryland crabs and Mission Bbq and Rick treated everyone to a Kona snowcone!

Today we celebrated the opening of Phase II of Rash Field Park, completing a vision that was shaped by Baltimoreans from the very beginning.

The community told us they wanted a park for all of Baltimore. A place to connect with nature, friends, family, and the larger community. A place that promotes wellness, recreation, discovery, and belonging.

That vision became our north star.

When Phase I opened in 2021, the response showed just how strongly that vision resonated. What was once a largely underutilized space attracting only a handful of visitors each day became one of the most vibrant public spaces on Baltimore's waterfront, welcoming thousands of visitors each month and creating a destination for residents and visitors alike.

Today, with the completion of Phase II, that vision is fully realized.

From the skate park, adventure play area, nature play spaces, pavilion, and overlook introduced in Phase I to the gardens, trails, volleyball and pickleball courts, fitness and obstacle course elements, open lawns, and event spaces added in Phase II, Rash Field Park now offers something for everyone. Amenities including shaded seating areas, tree canopy, waterfront overlooks, a beach and welcoming gathering spaces make it a place where people can not only play and explore, but also relax, connect, and simply enjoy being on Baltimore's waterfront.

Thank you to all the stakeholders who remained dedicated throughout this journey, and to Waterfront Partnership, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, our local leaders, funders, contractors, and the design team who helped make this vision a reality.

Today we begin a new and exciting chapter in the renaissance of Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

Good things happen when young people have the vision—and the determination—to make a difference.

Mahan Rykiel Associates is proud to lend a little time and expertise to two inspiring interns working with Nadine and Women Home Preservation on a community project near our work at 1420 West Baltimore Street.

Through our relationship with Nadine and the 1420 project, we learned about the students’ efforts to transform a nearby shed into a welcoming event space for their neighborhood. They reached out to us for some advice on planting and local sign fabrication, and we were happy to help.

These young people are working hard to make a difference in a challenging neighborhood. They have big ideas, lots of energy, and a real vision for how this little space can become something meaningful for their community. Now, they’re fundraising to make their vision for the shed and event space a reality.

🌿 Rash Field Park – Phase Two is almost here!

Last Thursday, Mahan Rykiel Associates was excited to join ULI Baltimore Content Before Cocktails for a special behind-the-scenes walking tour of the soon-to-open Phase Two expansion of Rash Field Park.

Scott Rykiel of Mahan Rykiel Associates and Dan Taylor of Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore shared the story behind the design and the evolution of the park — and there is a lot to look forward to!

Building on the success of Phase One, which quickly became one of the Inner Harbor’s most active destinations, Phase Two adds five new acres and expands Rash Field to more than eight acres of recreation, wellness, gardens and waterfront spaces.

Highlights include:

Waterfront beach with seating and shade
Volleyball courts
Pickleball courts
Playground
Fitness course
Rock garden and habitat features for native birds
Pride of Baltimore Memorial
Beautiful walking paths surrounded by native plantings and hundreds of boulders

And the best part? Rash Field Park – Phase Two opens to the public next week!

We’re proud to have played a role in creating this new chapter for one of Baltimore’s most beloved waterfront destinations. We can’t wait to see the community enjoying it!
