Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP)? Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP)? Geothermal Systems?

Which is correct? Are they all the same? Are they different?

The variety of terms and acronyms have led to some confusion and misunderstanding. We would like to help clear things up.

The three above terms and acronyms are all referring to the same heating and cooling technology.

Ground source heat pumps ARE geothermal heat pumps, and geothermal systems is just another way to refer to them.

The important thing to know is that they all refer to the same incredible, green, long-lasting technology that uses the heat from the earth to efficiently heat and cool a home or building.

It is also important to note that the above technology is very different than geothermal energy or power, which refers to the deep geothermal power generation that some large power plants use.

As this industry is building momentum, we are working hard to bring clarity and uniformity to terms and the vocabulary within the industry. As such, expect to see GSHP (ground source heat pump) begin to dominate the heating and cooling side, and geothermal to be used predominantly for power generation through deep geothermal.

We hope this clears things up! Still have questions? Ask us below or visit our website here for more information.

Geothermal heat pump technology uses the earth’s thermal properties and minimal electricity to provide space conditioning (heating & cooling) & water heating to your facility. No need to head South for the winter - this technology will sustain your property at constant comfort year-round regardless of extreme weather.
