Today – June 21st - marks the Summer Solstice, which is the longest day of the year. We will have 15 hours, 36 minutes and 50 seconds of daylight today, with sunrise at 5:26 a.m. and sunset at 9:03 p.m.

This date represents the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring when Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt (about 23.5 degrees) toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. At the June solstice, the Northern Hemisphere receives sunlight at the most direct angle of the year.

PROJECT PROFILE: Wisconsin Deck Addition

Here’s a deck project that Rush River Repairs finished for a client in Wisconsin. The client wanted to add onto an existing deck and install two separate railings. Dave from Rush River Repairs used green-treated lumber for the sub-structure and finished the project with cedar deck boards and railings.

The work was a bit tricky because Dave had to match the new wood to the old wood, since they would be joined when he finished. Dave must have "got it right" because his client was thrilled with the final product and is happily enjoying hosting friends and family on her much larger deck.

PROJECT PROFILE: Tiling Project in Party Room

Dave from Rush River Repair had a project that featured a very tight timeline and a very loud jackhammer. The project, from a client in Baldwin, Wisconsin, involved tiling a floor in a party room that had been previously carpeted. The homeowner, who used the room regularly to host parties for family and friends, was tired of the endless carpet cleanup and the hassle of trying to move furniture on a carpeted surface.

The project had two main barriers – a slate floor in front of the patio doors, and limited time which meant he couldn’t remove the baseboard before installing the tile. The slate was removed after some serious jackhammering, and Dave decided to cut the baseboard while it was still on the wall to fit the tile underneath it.
He used Snap Stone - a floating tile with a plastic cage under it that snaps together - to save additional time. After many, many cuts and fitting it was grouted and turned out wonderful.

Dave’s customer was very happy with the final look of the project and has received many compliments from guests at parties she has hosted since the work was done. One guest mentioned to the host, “The tile gives the room a whole new look!"
