Important warning for all koi and pond owners!

If you're dealing with rodents around your property, please be very careful about HOW you treat the problem near your pond.

Rodenticides and rat poison are extremely dangerous to your koi, even if the rodent never touches the water. Here's the real danger: a poisoned rodent can crawl near or into your pond as it dies, contaminating the water and introducing the toxin directly into your koi's environment. The results can be devastating, often lethal.

What to do instead: use traditional snap traps or live cage traps near your pond area. They're just as effective, and they eliminate the risk of secondary poisoning entirely.

A few tips:
- Place snap traps along fence lines and walls where rodents travel
- Check and reset traps regularly
- Keep traps away from areas where pets or wildlife could get to them
- Dispose of any rodents promptly and away from your pond

Your koi are counting on you to protect their water. A little extra care in how you handle pest control can save their lives.

Shade isn't just a nice-to-have for your koi pond — it's one of the most important things you can give your fish. Here's why:

☀️ Koi can get sunburned. Prolonged direct sun exposure, especially in shallow ponds, can actually damage a koi's skin and fade their color over time. This is particularly true for lighter-colored varieties like Kohaku and Shiro Utsuri.

🦅 Predators are always watching. Herons, egrets, and other hunters rely on a clear view of the water. Shade from plants, structures, or a shade sail breaks up that visual line and gives your koi a place to hide and feel secure.

🌡️ Shade keeps your water cool. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen — and in the heat of a Bakersfield summer, an unshaded pond can climb into dangerous temperature ranges quickly. Shade helps regulate that and keeps your fish comfortable and healthy.

🌿 Less sun = less algae. Direct sunlight fuels algae blooms. A shaded pond won't eliminate algae entirely, but you'll see significantly less of it — and clearer, more balanced water overall.

Whether you're using shade sails, overhanging plants like water iris or lotus, or a pergola structure, the goal is the same: protect your koi and keep your pond in balance.

What you're looking at is the silent enemy of a healthy pond — sunken, decaying debris sitting on the bottom.

Leaves, dead plant matter, and uneaten food don't just disappear when they sink. They break down and release ammonia, hydrogen sulfide (that rotten egg smell), and consume dissolved oxygen in the process. The result? Poor water quality, stressed koi, and conditions where disease and parasites thrive.

This is exactly why regular debris removal matters — not just for aesthetics, but for the health of every fish in your pond.

What to do: Net the surface before debris sinks. Do a bottom vacuum or partial cleanout a few times a year. And if your pond smells off or your koi are gasping at the surface, decaying debris at the bottom is one of the first places to look.

Keep that water clean — your koi will thank you.

If your pond is overpopulated, you’re moving/selling your home, you can’t care for your koi right now, or you just need help rehoming them safely, reach out.

Rescue koi are inspected, medicated as needed, and quarantined before going up for adoption.
