THROWBACK THURSDAY | NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

October is National Fire Prevention Month, and this week is Fire Prevention Week! It’s the perfect opportunity to revisit an important conversation about protecting homes and families throughout Kern County.

Today we’re throwing it back to an interview with BakersfieldNow, where we discussed the importance of annual chimney sweeping, fireplace inspections, and dryer vent maintenance.

One of the biggest concerns I encounter in the field is that many homeowners simply don’t realize what’s happening inside their chimney or dryer vent system. Creosote accumulation, lint buildup, deteriorating components, and improper installations can create serious fire hazards that often go unnoticed without professional service and inspection.

Fire prevention begins with awareness, education, and proactive maintenance!

As temperatures begin dropping across Kern County, now is the time to prepare your fireplace, chimney, and dryer vent systems for the months ahead.

🔥 OUR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES INCLUDE:

🎩 Chimney Sweeping
🔎 NFPA 211 Fireplace & Chimney Inspections
🧰 Gas, Pellet & Wood-Burning Hearth Appliance Service
💨 Dryer Vent Cleaning Service & Inspection
🏠 Chimney Caps & Spark Arresters

📅 DON’T WAIT UNTIL WINTER!

Fall appointments are filling as homeowners prepare for colder weather. Scheduling now helps ensure your fireplace, chimney, and dryer vent systems receive the professional attention they deserve before the busy winter season.

Whether you’re in Bakersfield, Tehachapi, Frazier Park, Pine Mountain Club, Kern River Valley, or elsewhere in Kern County, I’d be happy to help!

👻 THE SCARIEST PROBLEMS ARE THE ONES YOU CAN’T SEE 🎃

Halloween is only 4 weeks away, and cooler fireplace weather is coming to Kern County. 🔥

Before lighting that first fire, have your chimney swept and fireplace inspected. Creosote buildup, obstructions, deterioration, water intrusion, and other conditions can be hidden from view and may not be obvious from inside your home.

🎃 Keep the scares for Halloween — not your chimney.

🏠NATIONAL CHIMNEY SAFETY WEEK🗓️

A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to speak with Elaina Rusk at KGET - TV 17 Bakersfield about fireplace and chimney maintenance heading into the Fall season.

The message is still important today: having your fireplace and chimney inspected and serviced as needed is an important part of preparing for colder weather.

If it has been a while since your fireplace or chimney was inspected, now is a great time to get it on the schedule.

Your Gas Fireplace Deserves an Annual Checkup🩺

Cooler weather is coming to Kern County, and your gas fireplace may have been sitting unused for months. Before you rely on it this Fall, consider having the appliance professionally serviced and inspected.

From one heating season to the next, a direct-vent gas fireplace can develop issues such as dirty or deteriorating pilot and ignition components, burner-port buildup, shifted logs or decorative media, worn glass or door seals, venting obstructions, corrosion at the termination, electrical or battery issues, abnormal flame patterns, condensation concerns, and other changes that may affect how the appliance operates.

A professional service and inspection can help:

• Verify the burner, pilot and ignition system are operating properly
• Identify dirty, worn or deteriorated components
• Inspect the glass, gaskets and door assembly
• Check logs and decorative media for proper placement
• Inspect accessible venting components and the exterior termination
• Look for obstructions, corrosion or signs of moisture
• Evaluate flame characteristics and overall appliance operation
• Help identify potential carbon monoxide and combustion-related concerns
• Prepare the appliance for dependable use during the heating season

Gas fireplaces may be convenient, but gas does not mean maintenance-free.

Schedule your Gas Fireplace or Gas Fireplace Insert Service & Inspection before the holiday season!

245 Earthquakes in One Week — Is Your Chimney Ready for the Next One?

Most were very small — but it’s a good reminder why annual fireplace and chimney inspections matter.

Even minor seismic movement can potentially crack, shift, loosen, or worsen existing defects in:

• Masonry fireplaces and chimneys
• Factory-built fireplace and chimney systems
• Wood and pellet stoves or inserts
• Gas fireplaces and inserts
• Gas log systems

The concern is that not every change is visible from the room or from the ground.

If your fireplace or chimney hasn’t been inspected within the last year — especially if your home has experienced noticeable shaking — now is a good time to schedule your annual fireplace and chimney inspection.
