Wildfire preparedness isn’t just about clearing weeds and brush. CAL FIRE and the Kern County Fire Department both identify chimneys, roofs and surrounding vegetation as important parts of defensible space.

🔥 CHIMNEY & ROOFLINE SAFETY

🌳 Keep trees and branches at least 10 feet from chimney and stovepipe outlets.

🍂 Keep roofs and gutters clear of leaves, pine needles and other combustible debris.

🔥 Chimneys serving solid-fuel-burning fireplaces or appliances require an approved spark arrester under the California Building Code.

🏠 DEFENSIBLE SPACE

CAL FIRE and Kern County Fire Department guidance calls for:

• Up to 100 feet of fuel reduction around structures, or to the property line where applicable
• Removal of dead vegetation and ladder fuels
• Proper spacing of trees and vegetation
• Annual grasses maintained at 4 inches or less
• Clearance around LPG and fuel tanks
• Removal of dead limbs near or over structures

This is what we found at a dryer vent termination: a B-vent style termination cap packed with combustible dryer lint.

These caps can obstruct airflow very easily as lint collects around the openings. Once airflow becomes restricted, the entire dryer vent system can begin backing up with lint and heat—forcing your dryer to work harder, increasing drying times, wasting energy, and creating a significant fire hazard.
